Flamebait Friday Debate – Halo Reach Vs Killzone 3

It’s the battle of the jet pack jocks. Halo Reach is Bungie’s last effort at creating a Halo title and it looks like they are pulling all the stops to improve on their previous attempts as well as make the game as pretty as can be.

There is only one problem though, Killzone 3 is coming and it’s already looking gorgeous. Now while Halo games have never been the best looking games in the world, there is something about the gameplay and game modes that keep the fans coming back. While Killzone 2 was a complete powerhouse in terms of visuals, it never managed to pull in the same crazy following.

When Halo Reach and Killzone 3 are both available to the world, which do you think will be the better game? Is the Halo stale and will Killzone 3 manage to improve its mechanics to take on the mighty Microsoft franchise?

It’s Bungie vs Guerrilla, Halo vs Killzone. You tell us.

I’m a dual console owner, so please don’t respond with some “fanboy” comment.

I never found KZ2 to be the game people made it out to be. The controls were just the worst, the SP was dull, unepic and painfully stitched together and I never felt like I was there. I’ve had it for 7 months now and I haven’t even finished the SP (I’m on the last mission) – it just bored the hell out of me. I’m the worst biggest completionist (I finished Kung Fu Panda) so for me to not finish a game is something.

On the flip side, I find Halo 3 to be painfully dull as well (when playing alone) – however, add 3 friends for some co-op and it becomes one of the most fun games I’ve ever played. I’ve finished the campaign co-op about 7 times and I’ve loved every play through. Nothing gets the heart racing like that campaign. The MP is average as the lag is pretty bad, but I can understand why people still play it. Reach BETA was really really fun, and I’ll definitely get it. I also love the Halo Universe – HALO WARS was out of this world and ODST was… ok (actually it was pretty lame)

Off the bat, I can feel that Reach will be better than KZ3. Hopefully they’re equally as good, two amazing games sounds a lot more appealing to me than one amazing game and one mediocre game.

I am a single console owner – so in a sense I guess I have to be biased in some way.

I enjoyed Killzone 2. The controls didn’t bother me at all. The SP was pretty dull. The MP was amazing though – it was paced faster than the SP and the way the online system worked with badges and classes was awesome. Also it seems the ‘slower’ control system stopped the annoying people from buying the game. So you generally had a nice bunch of people playing.

I’ve played Halo a few times but only the MP. Seems more ‘fun’ than KZ2 but not as intense. You may as well mute the people you playing with though – I cannot stand the demographic that seem to buy Halo games (not all of you of course).

I know which one will be more successful – that is a given. If we are going by metacritic score then I would go with … actually no I have no clue. Not enough info is known about KZ3 yet. After E3 I’ll start making more decisions!

I have to lean more towards Halo on this one simply because of it’s amazing integrated community. It really does put it on a whole different level to any other game out there.

If we were talking pure looks then Killzone cake walks it.

In this debate Halo would win , but we can’t look at this in isolation because there is another monster around called Modern Warfare which have stolen the thunder of Killzone and halo.
With the little bit of stats available we know Killzone have about 30 000 to 50 000 active players (Lans stat quoted a while ago) or about 2 % of users are active players.

Where if you look at halo, with about 500 000 and up players still actively playing 5.5 % (even the reach beta had over a million) 10% of halo users.

And Then the other Monster Modern Warefare that we know on a weekly base have a lot more players on xbox
so we can say a 8 % penetration and this is most likely the same on the ps3 as well.

Killzone would still have to do a lot to increase
players actively keeping up to it because the above just show that both Halo and Modern Warfare is much more accessible to play.

just to add, wiki say halo reach beta had 2.7 million players , that would be 25% of players that have bought
    halo 3. massive.

My money is on Reach. The reports of the beta have been nothing but spectacular. Also, Killzone 3 in 3D strikes me as gimmicky.

I think Halo Reach will be better just because Bungie has far better games under their belt, and, since this is their last Halo game, they know it has to be very good. I own an Xbox 360 and have played all the Halos, and my neighbor has a Playstation 3 (plus an Xbox 360), so I have also played the Killzones as well. I found both Killzones to be very dull and boring plot-wise, but they had what has to be some of the best graphics ever. Saddly, the graphics are the best thing about it. I haven’t played enough multiplayer to judge that, but I found the single player mode very boring and unoriginal.

The Halo games typically are very exelent, but Halo 3 was a bitt dull. The game was so focused on ballance that sometimes it felt as if it forgot to be fun. It had an alright story but it pales in comparison to either of it’s earlier counterparts. Something was lifeless about Halo 3, and Halo ODST was even worce. While Halo ODST did offer a few interesting ideas, the game was beyond just boring—it was bad. The story is its weakest point. The plot and dialoge was cheesy, cliché, unoriginal, and offten unimaginitive. If Halo ODST is any indication of a trend, them Halo Reach has no chance on the single-player front. I did play the Halo Reach Beta, and think (aside from some issues like headshots registering wrong) it is definatly better than Halo 3 and has potential to be even better.

Really we will just have to wait to see which is better because we can’t know until both games are realeased.

“while Halo games have never been the best looking games in the world” No game even came close to Halo 2’s graphics when it was released.

“While Killzone 2 was a complete powerhouse in terms of visuals, it never managed to pull in the same crazy following.” Killzone is made exclusivly for a consol that hasn’t been widly adopted. Of course it won’t have as big of a following as Halo. Give the Playstation 3 some time to gain more momentum.

im conveying a message, seriously why should i bother to read what i type, i dont have that much time, and generally i just type a quick burst on whatevers on my mind. i dont have a pc ego or insecurity about my ability to speak english, ive got a 1st grade english certificate. plus i matriculated with 70% at hilton which was actually my lowest mark in 3 years, so you may think your being smart, but i really dont think your any better than me.

i write to annoy people and to rant about my interests if evr1 was like you ,sites like this would not exist because no one would care or argue about anything. people like you come and go and never have anything interesting at all to say. all you can do is say lame comebacks or insult people but you will never take a risk and say something worthwhile except if its well accepted,” even if its not true”.

your just like the germans who said south africa could never run a world cup, this is a blog site, spelling grammar, peoples feelings etc.. to me are null and void.

It’s very rare that I agree with much of what you say but for once I agree with quite a bit here lans.

I do love the way you will blindly defend everything you love and push through to make it a reality against all costs.

However doing it by insulting others and using terrible grammar is really not the way to get your point across, it just makes you look ignorant.

I felt lied to when purchasing Halo 3, the hype was HUGE…. I loved playing Halo CE and Halo 2, thinking man.. Halo 3’s campaign is gonna blow me away!

Finishing it in like 3 days… With about one to two hour marathons a day.

    Going…. WTF just happend?!

Killzone 2 was much beter in the multiplayer concept… was less lag for obvious reasons. And the graphics blew me away. Despite its weird control layout

In all truth.. I will probably get Halo:Reach seeing most of my mates, will get this, just to play a bit co-op. Seeing that we wore GOw2 out like a year ago!

Im new here so, hey friends:)

Ok, this is how I see both games and what they offer. I have played all halo games and killzone 2 so this isn’t going to be a biased review. So lets leave it at this-

Halo: Reach is hyped because of past predecessors. Halo is a great shooter series, but nowhere near perfect. The multiplayer mode does lag and the graphics never evolve. Every 360 Halo game has the same graphics as Halo 3 if im not mistaken, which isn a bad thing. It keeps gameplay familiar. The overall game is overhyped. Yes its award wining but nothing deserves this much hype.

But……Halo is a superb game for people that love the multiplayer, which is a mechanic that Bungie has had years to perfect. Now this is the one thing that Halo has over the Killzone series. Also, people tend to give Halo the edge in terms of a great storyline. This is also where Killzone lacked in 2.

Now, for Killzones pros nd cons.

Killzone seemed to be a revamped series, although the gameplay was held back due to the strange default controls (click L3 to zoom in? WTF??). Also the lack of an offline multiplayer was another letdown for more people since Halo has had this since the original, and that is what started the phenomenon: A solid offline experience. Also, the enemies seem a little too generic.

But for everything Killzone does wrong, it makes up for in a good way. The storyline was not AAA, but was indeed a nice game to sit through. Like I said before, the enemies are too generic, but this can also be a good thing. Not everything in a shooter has to be an alien or an army general. Killzone chose to be inbetween, and this actually worked well within my eyes. Also, it doesn’t take a blind man to know that Killzone 2 has some of the best graphics on the PS3 to date, Halo cannot compare. Now the multiplayer on killzone, like stated in another post is actually better than Halo’s multiplayer. It doesn’t lag nearly as much nd was more fun. Halo is just all out better to play overall with more people because more are used to Halo.

In my eyes I see Halo Reach being the same experience as the other, with added content, but that’s all a sequel is anyway. Killzone is just getting started. I actually was blown away by Killzones beautiful graphics and amazing level design to compliment them. But I was drawn back by the lack of weapons and mising ofline multiplayer mode. Halo 3 has this and Reach will not dissapoint. As of now I see Reach slightly edging out KZ3 simply because of the name. But given the fact that this will be Bungies last Halo game, this could be the opening Killzone needs. Then it will be Killzone vs Call of Duty vs Medal of Honor vs Battlefield Bad Company.

My bets are on Killzone for the moment. I have played both games and enjoyed both greatly. Halo takes the nod because of hype, but Killzone is my choice simply because its the underdog=)
