Flamebait Friday Debate: Multiplayer – Gears of War 3 vs Killzone 3

If there are two games that I really enjoyed playing online, it was Gears of War and Killzone 2. Next year sees the release of the third iterations of both exclusive behemoths, each packed with new features to make you giddy in your pants.

Which one is going to be the best? Well, that’s what today’s debate is all about. Gears of War 3 is looking seriously hot with its new modes, weapons and features while Killzone 3 is pretty much boasting exactly the same.

Who is going to come out on top in a head to head battle between these two massive franchises. Let’s do this.

    Can you compare the two? They’re not exactly the same genre, and I would have thought Halo 3 vs Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2 vs Gears of War 2 would be “fairer”?

    Anyway, I enjoyed the MP of the first Gears of War, but the sequel was just a laggy bugfest, that annoyed the snot out of me (which is sad because I really enjoy split-screen Horde mode). It was also easier to join a MP game from the lobby in Gears of War 1, Gears of War 2 MP on the other hand was just a disappointment.

    Although, to their defence, I have no idea how it now, it might have been patched, improved etc. I haven’t played Gears of War 2 online since last year.

    As for Killzone 2’s multiplayer, I really can’t say anything bad about it A nice selection of classes (which you can customise later, Turrets + Medic health packs = points), maps and you can always find an MP game. The lobby is always populated, so it’s easy to just jump into a MP game.

    As for Gears of War 3 and Killzone 3, I really have no opinion since neither have been released yet, but what’s been promised for both look pretty awesome, albeit generic multiplayer.

    I’m a huge Gears of War fanboy so for me it’s a no brainer, I cannot wait to smash some Alpaca skulls in next year.

    And the new executions are just…. I have no words… wait till you see a locust get incinerated by having a flamethrower shoved down his throat… Testosterone FTW :devil:

    I agree with bobby you cant really compare the two. This would have been a better debate if you had made it Gears of War vs Vanquish. And before everyone naturally rights off Vanquish just remember it comes from the man that inspired Gears of War and created the magnificent Resident Evil 4 Shinji Mikami.

    Vanquish has no multiplayer. That makes me emo.

    They are different beasts entirely – but Gears of War holds a special place in my heart.

    It’s the game that convinced to leap in to “HD” console gaming, got me involved in the Xbox 360 community – which eventually lead to me writing for this site.

    Of course I’ll still get KZ 3 though. 😀

    Gears is actually a pretty decent game, and I’d highly recommend it. The first one is on PC as well, so you can give it a go, without wasting money on an xbox 360.

    @Fred and @BobbyKotick

    If you have never play Gears of War multiplayer, you pretty much haven’t played Gears. It would be the same as never having played Starcraft’s multiplayer.

    While I do enjoy playing the Gears campaigns, especially co-op, the multiplayer is really where you see that game shine.

    Gears!!!!! hands down. I borrowed Killzone 2 , but could not get into it at all. Will probably be the same with Killzone 3.

    Agreed. First time you defeat Raam on insane difficulty with a mate is a near religious experience, especially if you’ve been playing through the campaigns together, died together and killed together. Gears 2 Co-op was cool too, but since it’s the Two Towers of the franchise, it was always going to get the brunt of the criticisms (damnit Dom, you emo bastard).

    But you can’t deny that multiplayer on the second game was a lot weaker and not as fun because of the bugs and exploits.

    @Bobby

    Gears 1 has WAAAAAYYY more bugs than Gears 2 in the multiplayer, although I still prefer Gears of War 1’s multiplayer pacing by far

    I did not know that. Thanks for the update. I guess multiplayer wouldnt work because of the speed of the game???

    If I remember correctly, Gears 2 was practically unplayable until the first patch and even then it wasn’t plain sailing for months. Gears 1 had its own issues, but at least you could connect to a ranked game in the lobby a week after launch. The first ranked game I could get into on Gears 2 happened weeks after the game was launched, and by then I was already done with Gears 2.

    Anyway, as I mentioned above, I haven’t played Gears 2 in over a year, so whether it’s finally what it should have been all those many months ago, is completely beyond my knowledge.

    But gears 2 added really cool new modes. I’ll try gears 2 again one of these days, maybe re-do the campaign with a friend.

    I’ve never played Killzone, and it honestly doesn’t appeal to me. Gears, on the other hand, is one of my favourite franchises for its rocking couch co-op. Its intense, visceral (overplayed word, I know), and a BUCKET of fun. I also find it challenging without being frustrating.

    And is there a cooler “base” weapon than the Lancer?

    I am keen to try Killzone 2 (and obviously 3) but it has never sprung up as a “must-have” game. I don’t particularly care much for Halo, so perhaps I’ve just grown relatively bored of FPSes.

    I’m going to choose killzone 3 only because I never really got into GOW online. Imo Killzone 2 was ok the story was a bit cliched leaving it open for a sequel but the multiplayer was so unexpected, it was so deep. I honestly think this would have been bad for the casual gamer but I loved it
