Flamebait Friday Debate: Was Gran Turismo 5 Worth The Wait?

Hey, don’t look at me like that, it’s Friday remember?

You guys have probably had your fair share of Gran Turismo 5 articles and debates by now, but today’s debate is one worth discussing.

Gran Turismo 5 has now been out for over a week and it’s no mystery that the game has its fair share of problems. The game took 5 years to develop, which is the usual amount of time that it takes usual developers to make 2 and half Triple-A titles.

Does it feel like it was worth it in the end? Do you rather wish that the game was released two years ago without weather, damage or day/night cycles and then improved with smaller releases over the next few years? On the flip side, do you think the sales will be high enough to justify the development time needed, even with Prologue selling a good chunk?

Now’s the time to get it off your chest.

I haven’t played this yet, and I don’t intend on playing it, but from a professional standpoint, the amount of time put into development versus the end results based on what was promised is usually meant to awe and inspire.

I’ve not seen one GT5 fan come running at me like a fanboy shouting “It’s everything I’ve dreamt it would be! OMFG I want to have it’s babies!”

Instead I’ve only seen mixed reactions, ala “Meh it’s ok, at least it’s not Crackdown 2”. and “Hey it’s december, and there’s nothing better out, so I might as well…”.

I guess what it boils down to is as the old adage goes. Under-sell and oversupply. The people at Polyphony clearly never heard that saying before.

Yes its worth the wait. For sure! I don’t really mind the time period, more the end result. Is it perfect, no, not at all. But is a a great racing simulation. You bet.

Is Starcraft 2 worth 10 years of waiting. No, but it’s still a great game.

Yeah but Blizzard knows how to market a game. Don’t reveal too much details, just an awesome preview trailer and some gameplay footage every now and then. Don’t tell people who to expect!

Well PD had no competition until Forza 2 so they were the only mainstream sim gurus.

But you know what happens to projects with iterative or no defintie deadlines

I dunno, I think a wait all depends on whether or not you really really want the game or not.

I have not been waiting for GT5 for 5 years cos I never had a PS3 or any console back then(just PC), so for me its just another game that came out that I might buy.
I can understand how fanboys will get upset with waiting 5 years but if you are not a fanboy did you really wait 5 years?

    Shift 2! Will be AWESOME!

Why do you want 1000 cars, when you can get 20? 10 of cars will be available from the start. 5 will need to be unlocked with your EA Online pass and the other 5 will have to be bought as DLC, even though they are on the disk.

That’s how awesome Shift 2 is! Doing less, and getting paid more! Thumbs Up!

    /sarcasm 😛

kudos for that comment !! i agree but they still let us down by creating such hype of perfection and then they release a half baked game now really people signed petitions cause the blackops was sold half baked to the ps3 public so y is digital polyphony getting off so lightly they better coming out with a 10 gig update for this damn game and fix everything !!!! then i’ll be happy

If PD was with Activision, Big Boss Kotick would have sunk them ages ago, because you have to milk your franchises, until no one wants to buy them any more (Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk etc.). Or better yet, break up the game into 3 parts, and release them as separate games (yeah Starcraft.. here’s looking at you boy).

I hope GT6 doesn’t take another 5 years, but I certainly hope they don’t release it next year, or GT7 the following year.

Might as well turn GT into an arcade racer then, eh Bobby? Oh and slap a well known driving celebrity to be the face. Eg.: Michael Schumacher’s Gran Turismo 2011

Well worth the wait. I am amazed at how big and comprehensive this game is. Feels like I’ve played so much but the end doesn’t seem to be in sight yet. For me it is GT5, then NFS (x2 from the series), then DIRT, then WIPEOUT, then MARIO KART, then FORZA, then PGR.

And if that fails, give the cars power-ups and energy weapons (because we clearly haven’t seen enough of that)

well , i think the whole story is lame , they should of made gt5 come out wen prologue did , and then just update it over the years , so wen the ps4 comes out they make gt6 from the start and just update it over the years , same with ps5 and gt 7 ? make sure the game is ready we the console launches and update it over the years ? its not like PD are updateing gt5 this saturday ???

But then how would they have been able to make money off the game? Remember, that not so long ago, the internet revolted against paying $2 for horse armour (Oblivion).

In less than 5 years, it seems it’s common to pay for overpriced DLC (without even blinking) or inconsequential avatar clothes (mother of.. I still don’t understand), but had GT5 entered in 2005/6 with a DLC model, Sony and PD would have been crucified by the internet.

I’ve been saying they should have included more vehicle types in GT5 since GT1 days. A mate and I always used to joke that they had everything but the kitchen sink in GT2. I loved the inclusion of Drag cars and I was sorely dissapointed that they took Drag racing out of the title. Motorcycles would round out the title, along with several other vehicle types. If you wanna get downright funny, you could even include speedboats 😛

if PD has dropped all the cars except the premium models and not included the old tracks then spent that time fixing the sound then it would have been worth it.

But 5 years development time to have reviews that state “It’s great BUT blah blah blah” just ruins it’s heritage

Nope not worth the wait, after how many years and money and this is what they come up with, 1000 vehicle my ass several hundred cloned options. Physics still a bit ping pongish and that sound well enough’s been said about that already.

GT5 is like the half-bred one-eyed gapped-tooth 5 cousin of Forza 3 no scratch that GT5 wishes it shared some of the same DNA as Forza 3.

I have not spent as much time with GT5 as I would like but have spent 2-3 hrs playing the game and as a driving simulator it is a good but not necessary great game. I truly am astounded by the fact that PD released a game where 80% of the content is of inferior quaulity to the rest of the game. If Turn10 had released FM3 with models from the original Forza I can only imagine how the SDF would have taken the piss. Or imagine if you will Naughty dog releasing Uncharted 2 with mindblowing graphics in the first and last chapters of the game and having large chunks in the middle looking like the original tomb raider.

    quatity is not quality!!!
Grafics and cardboard trees is unforgivable…
:ermm: is like if they didn’t bother and colected cars from GT4 and pasted on the disk.
:dizzy: if took them 6 years to come up with this… and a scratch on the bumper… errrr

Was it worth waiting 5 years for? As in would you wait another 5 years for GT6 if you were assured the same level of quality and fun? Didn’t think so
