RIME launching this May 2

RIME has had a troubled time in the realm of publishing. The puzzle title from Tequila Works started its life as a PS4 exclusive, before Sony decided to drop the title. The game went into hiding after, only resurfacing recently to reassure fans that it was still being worked on, and now coming to even more platforms. The good news is that RIME is out even sooner than you might have expected, with the game launching on May 26 – at least on most platforms.

The game is launching on Xbox One, PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, costing only $29.99 on three of those platforms. The Switch version of the game won’t make the May release date, with Tequila Works revealing that they’ll need a little more time to work with Nintendo’s new console. There’s also the curious question around its price. RIME on Switch is going to cost a full $10 more, and right now there’s no clear answer as to why that’s the case.

Attempting to answer the question via an FAQ, Tequila Works didn’t really make it clear as to why there is this difference.

We set prices for our products based on the costs of development and publishing for each specific platform.

This makes the Switch version at least a tough sell. It’s later and more expensive, which makes one wonder why it’s even coming out at all. What’s stranger is why this is the case. Is there something to do with Nintendo publishing that Tequila is skirting around explaining, or is additional work for the platform to blame. Until Tequila have a straight answer, a guess is as good as it’s going to get.

RIME itself looks delightful though, tasking players to use light, positioning and more to solve puzzles on a gorgeous, colourful island. It’s Wind Waker styled aesthetic is an immediate draw, and I’m hoping its puzzles have used the extensive development time to present themselves as engrossing and rewarding.

I guess they have no Rime or reason for the big Switch in pricing. 😛
