Fox News: "Is Bulletstorm the Worst Video Game in the World?"

Ten bucks says that Epic Games is behind this Fox News report; it would fit with their already barmy publicity campaigns for upcoming FPS Bulletstorm. The thing is, the report on Bulletstorm prompted Fox to invite some “professionals” in for an opinion. One such “professional” said that videogames are to blame for the rise of rape cases in the USA.

Yeah, you read that right. According to TV Psychologist Dr. Carole Lieberman, videogames are directly responsible for prompting people to commit sexually violent crimes: “The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games” she said. Of course, she didn’t have any evidence or research to back this up. Why did Bulletstorm prompt such a statement? Because of its Skillshots scoring system.

According to the Fox News report, the names given to certain ways of killing opponents in the game are enough to prompt gamers to start raping people. The Skillshot system  “ties the ugly, graphic violence into explicit sex acts; ‘topless’ means cutting a player in half, while a ‘gang bang’ means killing multiple enemies”.

The report then goes on to claim that children “as young as nine years old” will be playing Bulletstorm (because, you know, it has that definite Sesame Street vibe going throughout; any parent who buys it for their kid deserves every ounce of bad behaviour from their spawn) and that the subversive violence in videogames is “reaching a fever pitch”.

Whatever, this is all just further publicity for People Can Fly and Epic Games, so that’s good news! Any publicity is good publicity, right? In fact, it’s made me go out and pre-order the game just to spite Fox News and its panel of “professionals”. So, fellow gamers, I’ll see you on the inside because we’re all serial rapists and the law is going to eventually catch up with us.
