As much as I like to think that the console wars are best left in the past, I have to admit that competition between giants of the gaming industry is healthy stuff. Just look at the current generation of gaming we’ve all been a part of: Sony won it hands down with the PlayStation 4, besting Microsoft at every turn and ushering in an era where its games spoke volumes.
While Microsoft’s Xbox One kicked off its life with a Kinect 2.0 camera tethered to it like a bad tumor and Don Mattrick completely cocking up the messaging of the console, Sony forged ahead and created an ecosystem of high quality exclusive games, gambles and the best operating system a console has ever seen.
Microsoft would eventually turn things around with numerous announcements and the ballsiest of acquisitions, aiming to create not just a great console but a terrific ecosystem at the same time. On the twilight of this console generation, the Xbox One has been transformed into something fantastic. The Xbox One X still has plenty of horsepower to spare, Xbox Game Pass is a stupid amount of value for a low price, and the groundwork for the Xbox Series X has been a confident push of big reveals and transparency.
And then there’s Sony with the PS5. While I still think the console will be superb in the long run, right now it’s a device that’s playing second fiddle to the Xbox Series X. Does it have great games and studios? Absolutely, but those products are mostly a long way away from being realised. If there’s a war on, then Microsoft is winning hearts and minds by telling its audience everything it wants to know about its console: Its strengths and it weaknesses.
With the PS5 though, there’s so much that we don’t know currently about it:
- Why are save-games locked behind a cross-gen barrier?
- What SSD expansion options will there be?
- How much of the 825GB hard drive space will there be to store games on?
- Can I store PS5 games on an external hard drive?
- Is there a Quick Resume feature like what the Xbox Series X has?
- What does the operating system look like?
- How long will the DualSense battery last?
- Can I create custom button assignments like on PS4?
- What does the create button do?
- What sound systems will the Tempest audio technology support?
- Is Dolby Atmos supported?
Sony’s lack of transparency has been…odd, to say the least. Maybe there’s a great console ready to rock the market, but with muddy cross-gen potential, a small library, and a very limited stock of consoles, it’s easy to see why the Xbox Series X is currently emerging as the first choice amongst gamers in these more cash-strapped times.
The first salvos have been fired, but what do you make of the latest reports from the front? Has Sony lost the first battle in the new console wars? Sound off below.

I’m going for the PS5 because of the PSVR. PSVR offers game experiences which cannot be experienced on a pancake screen. There’s currently no known ongoing plans to introduce VR to the Xbox platform. Star Wars Squadrons, here I come!!!

I’m considering a Xbox Series X despite wanting a PS5 more. This is only because I dont think there will be more stock of PS5 this holiday and as a fulltime working professional, holiday season is the only time I get to game to my hearts desire otherwise I only get several hours a week. last night I browsed the gamepass library to see what on offer and not a single game sparked ny interest (I had already played the top tier games).
I still need more convincing to get Xbox SX. the games releasing along side haven’t touted any next gen features that my current PS4 pro cant do to some degree already.

Owning a PC and a PS5 is arguably the best solution. PC exclusives? Check. Steam/EGS/etc? Check. Sony Exclusives? Check. Gamepass? Check. Xbox 1st party titles? Check. Multiple input methods? Check. Sales on all 3 platforms? Check.

I’d rather wait, and just from experience with Microsoft, they have a reputation of overselling features (the Peter Molyneux effect). Just remember how powerful the cloud was supposed to be with the xbone, or how amazing the new kinect was supposed to be, or for that matter how amazing the kinect was supposed to be with the xbox 360.
I prefer Sony’s approach: no bullshit. If you don’t have anything to say yet, don’t say it. Don’t advertise features in development until they’ve come to fruition. Microsoft on the other hand will muddy the water with all sorts of PR nonsense, which will never materialise or be a shadow of itself when it’s released.

agreed, I’m in no position to buy either at the moment, will also wait, my thing is game pass offers much more than ps plus and I’m basing it on that alone, I’ve played all the titles from ps plus in the last 6 months and nothing wowed me except titanfall, but then you have to wait today for players to come online to play and the storyline is pretty much the same after every mission, so looking forward to this months need for speed, but lets see, cos on the other hand the titles on game pass even they may be not as out there as ps, but if you don’t like something, just install the next one, so you have options.

One thing that I think Microsoft has been good about is how they basically forced Sony to take PSN seriously. I’m still not happy about paying for multiplayer (granted you can play Warframe and a couple other free games without plus). But, that bit of competition really put a fire under their bottoms….
Will Sony’s version of GamePass be as good? I don’t know.
I’m also curious as to how sustainable it is. How much is Microsoft paying to have some of those titles on there? Is it impacting game sales on the platform and to what extent? And, if you’re a developer or a publisher, are you keen on your game being on the service, if yes, then Microsoft must be paying a pretty penny. And, if Sony follows suit, can they afford it in the long run? There’s a reason Steam noped out on a subscription model, and they’re one of the few who could afford it… Even Epic is staying far from it (and they’re being propped up by a big bag of chinese money), and that has to tell you something.

With the rising cost of games, a subscription model is the way to go. Sony needs to really compete on that level with MS to stay relevant. The game price Sony released for Europe and India are way higher than in The US. So they might loose customers for that reason.

You are right to be concerned about giving away ownership of your games. That’s the same reason I still buy physical copies of games and only buy digital games when they are on a crazy sale because if one day your account is hacked or they decide to ban you then you loose your entire game collection.
That to me is not worth the convenience it brings.
But we have to acknowledge that the world is moving in a direction were people are giving up a lot for mere conveniences.

It does depend on what you normally play, obviously any multiplayer game the disc is worthless instantly as they can just ban you anyway.
It’s also not to hard for them to ban the disc from working in your console.

Sony haven’t stuffed up as much as Microsoft did during the start of the previous gen (XBOne/PS4). That said there is no better value proposition than Xbox/PC + Game Pass currently. Unfortunately, value proposition is not how gamers decide which console they prefer. What is clear is that neither Sony nor MS have much to worry about for the current gen, both have really good hardware and some good games lined up.

It’s funny, in a world where everything has become so divisive, the idea of nuanced opinion has flown out the window, Sure Microsoft has done all the right things, they have a incredibly compelling reason to buy their product. Good for them. But the fact that we have to have this pointless debate is rather foolish. People are going to buy what people are going to buy. Simple as that. Truth be told, I don’t even know what I am going to buy until they day comes. Probably a PS5, but you never know.
Sony has shown some substantial game-play, arguably not games that meet everyone’s tastes, but games that look incredible. Kena : Bridge of Spirits looks like a Pixar film come to life. Ratchet and Clank looks pretty damn cool and the Spider Man stuff was impressive. Where I have an issue is the lack of game-play from Microsoft leaves me in a place where I can’t make a truly informed decision. And believe it or not, In this case, I do want to do that.
In the long term, if life permits, I will probably end up with both. I have a One X that was a waste of money because it just didn’t have any games, And I think MS have changed that now. At least I have a fairly new One X to sell to put money towards whatever console I end up buying.

When my PC went bottoms up last year, I had to resort to the PS4 ecosystem as that was my choice of console for the current generation, and it was definitely worth every sent. This generation of PS4 exclusives has been great: GoW, Horizon, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, etc. I never bothered with the Xbox One because my PC was my primary platform for most games, and MS didn’t really have much in the way of great exclusive franchises in comparison to Sony. Now, with the next generation, I have jumped onboard with Microsoft, and have already pre-ordered my Xbox Series X through Makro (I just hope I don’t receive a message from them saying they have to refund me due to limited stock, like what’s happening with the PS5 overseas). Why did I choose them over the PS5. Surprisingly enough it has nothing to do with the Xbox being more powerful than the PS5 on paper, or because I prefer Microsoft to Sony. It was 90% on the basis of Game Pass. With the announcement soon after pre-orders opened being that basic games would be hitting R1400 or so each, and MS’s acquirement of Bethesda, I believe my choice is even more justified. To be honest, I will most probably get a PS5 in about 2 or so year’s time anyway. I still want to play their exclusives.
TL;DR – Is Xbox leading the console war? Well, yes, but a war is a series of smaller battles, and while MS has won many battles so far, the war is far from over. The nail in Sony’s coffin will only really be if MS can topple Sony with the quality of their 1st party games. For me, that is the only thing at the moment that Sony holds sway over MS with. They have some great exclusives in the pipeline.

Game Pass does add a lot of value for sure but does that translate to cheaper prices on new releases? I’m legitimately asking because I have not had an Xbox since Halo 3 days.
I think the addition of the Xbox Series S was a master stroke by MS. Even though I will definitely be getting the PS5 first, I am much more likely to buy both consoles this generation because of the ‘budget friendly’ option.
Regarding the Bethesda takeover, have they announced anything yet or are there rumours of new developments? If there are no exclusives in the works that will release in the next 12 months then Sony will still maintain that upper hand at the start.

The truth is that games from non-MS studios will most probably not hit Game Pass anytime soon, if at all (But that’s not to say they won’t. During the early days of Game Pass on PC, which I joined the moment it became available, some decent 3rd party titles hit the store pretty quickly afterwards), so yeah, certain games you will still have to pay full price for unless you wish to wait for them to go on special. But there are many great games on Game Pass that I’m eager to play right now, and MS I don’t think has yet hit its stride in procuring studios or reaching agreements with external studios. So I personally believe Game Pass will get even bigger! Whether many or all Bethesda games going forward hit PS5, no one can really say yet. I doubt they would pay 7.5 billion dollars for a studio if they do not intend to gain some benefit from it and have certain Xbox/PC exclusives leaving that those studios.

I am very curious to see whether MS have the balls to make all the Bethesda games exclusive to Xbox. In my mind I agree with you that they wouldn’t spend so much on the purchase if they didn’t intend to use it to challenge the PS exclusives. On the other hand I would be interested to know how much potential revenue MS could lose if hardcore PS fans decide to give them the proverbial finger and boycott Bethesda games all together.

Also you’re going to be spending R120 a month on PS Plus anyway to play online, R149 for Gamepass Ultimate,(contains GP, Xbox live and EA Access)? It’s just not even comparable at the moment. I love my PS4, but I personally will be going Xbox for this generation. I’ll pick up a PS5 at the end of the cycle for cheaper and play all the exclusives)

Yeah that’s valid. For me personally it makes no difference as I’m not a fan of Bethesda’s offerings but for fans of Fallout, Doom, etc. I hope MS will release cross platform. At least then the consumer will have the option to shell out that the R1,400.00
I’ll probably do the exact opposite and buy the Series S closer to the end of the cycle to play Halo Infinite and Senua’s Saga.

So that’s the thing right, new games are still going to be priced the same. If Xbox first party titles mean something to you then you’re getting that day one on Gamepass, if not then it’s going to come down to the consumer and how much those new titles mean to them. Either you wait for a price drop, hope it comes to Gamepass or spend the cash.
Gamepass is insane value for money, but the value proposition still comes down to what the individual consumer finds important.
As for Bethesda. No new developments, and the 2 PS5 timed exclusives from them will remain as such for now.

Okay I thought as much. My reasoning then is why should I drop 8/12k on a new console to play the same library of games available to the Xbone? For people looking to switch that could make sense I guess but to me it feels like I’d be wasting the potential of next gen by playing previous gen games. Until of course the new exclusives start coming out.
Agreed, it really is going to come down to consumer preferences and what you find important in a console. I have no brand loyalty but I will not be able to let the new GOW go past.

I’m waiting to see what exclusives and the how they’re gonna release Bethesda games going forward before considering a Xbox but for me, personally, Gamepass isn’t that enticing right now.

I’ve already committed to getting the PS5 later in its lifespan. The only justification I can find for getting the PS5 is their exclusives, and right now the next gen exclusives are nowhere to be seen yet obviously! By the time I get the PS5, I expect there to be many more exclusives to justify the purchase. Right now, until such time as I can afford to get my PC up and running again, I will use the Xbox Series X as my ecosystem of choice.

That’s actually the best way to go about it, I’ve mentioned it so many times, the first generation of consoles (fresh on launch day) are always riddled with issues, whether it’s serious problems like out-of-the-box bricked systems to weird design flaws to software issues…etc. Those are always highlighted soon after a console is released, and it’s rare that a console is launched without some issue. Waiting a bit for the second or third design or a revised model is probably the smartest thing to do.
To pay a premium for a console and then to beta test it for these companies has to be peak-simp.

The problem I have with Sony this days is that the PS division is now run by the Americans. Which is infested with SJWs. That’s why games on PS are more censored than Nintendo ones. They are now even making it hard for anime style games to be published one the platform. That’s why the Japs are now starting to embrace Xbox and the Series X pre-orders sold out so quickly there.

I feel I need to own both consoles for this generation, Sony for exclusives, xbox for everything else. I decided to get the Series X first because the Sony exclusives are mostly single player games so playing them later doesnt change how great they are. Gamepass library keeps me very busy so from a cost perspective is an easy choice. I would love if Microsoft could finally release some exclusives that match the caliber and quantity of Sony.

Depends, if you’re on any of the local gaming facebook groups, there’s two parts to it, one is just selling a game.
And depending on the game you can make a decent amount back, and sometimes if you’re selling to a collector you can make a decent amount of profit too. I sold one of my old PSOne games to a collector a few months ago for about R600 (I could have probably made a lot more if I sold it on amazon). They desperately wanted it. Mostly of course, you’re just selling older games to clear space, rather than for profit.
The other part of it, and the more popular (from my experience) is just trading games. So trading one title for another.
You can’t do that with gamepass.

First salvo: I will give this to XBox. Still not getting me into it just yet, but if PS5 does not come out swinging in the new year*, I will be going Team Green again.
*Just paid 21k for car parts yesterday, making it around 70k for the year. Man, Rotary Engines get expensive over time! Also, CRUNCH (aka pre-Millenials normal working arrangements) are coming again so yeah, less distractions needed.

All of it numb nuts…The OS takes up the initial 175gb of space on the 1tb drive with the remaining 825 for game and app installs…
similar to PS4 which used around 93gb for its OS…

Majority of my friends here are PS4 owners.
Despite the recent news of Game Pass with EA and Bethesda and the insanely cheap subscription, they will not consider switching to Xbox.
And I’m in Australia, we have All Access. It’s really affordable to get a Series S/X.
That is how well the PS brand is regarded.
I really don’t know how much more MS needs to spend to get people to buy in. It’s really fascinating to watch.

Think xbox is making all the right moves, if Sony doesn’t offer something similar to gamepass soon they will loose a lot of market share. I love how MS is OK with taking xbox owners along for the ride, not forcing them to upgrade. I’m a Sony fan, but they seem to be very stubborn / greedy / cocky at this point in time
