Friday Debate: Which of the remaining 2018 games will be the biggest letdown?

We’re nearly three quarters of the way through 2018, which means that it’s time for the deluge of annual blockbuster games. We’ve got the annualised sports games and shooters, and other great, hugely anticipated games on the way in the next three months or so.

This month sees Pro Evolution Soccer 19 kick off, while next month explodes with Destiny 2 Forsaken, Spider-Man, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and PES’s perpetual competition FIFA 19. In October we’ll see Forza Horizon 4, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Battlefield V, WWE 2K19. Of course, October caps off with the game that everybody else has moved their release dates for: Red Dead Redemption 2.

November will belong to Fallout 76 and Pokémon: Let’s Go Eeevee and Pikachu – though we’ll also get to play Hitman 2 and Darksiders 3. December’s a little quieter with only Just Cause 4 and Super Smash Bros Ultimate

That’s a lot of gaming, and it’s likely that some of those games (and the others I haven’t listed) are going to be incredible. That said, it’s just as likely that one or two hugely anticipated games are going to end up being duds.

Me? I have a sneaking suspicion that Spider-Man’s going to fall only slightly short of expectations. I also think WWE2K 19 is going to be close to awful. I have to say I’m not really feeling much love for Battlefield V. Can Darksiders 3 live up to expectations after so long?

You tell us though: Which of the remaining 2018 game releases do you expect to be the biggest letdown?

No wait, we know that will suck!
Destiny 2 Forsaken – that will surely deflate the fanboys 😛

    Fallout 76…….
Destiny 2 Forsaken will disappoint (and I am the eternal Destiny fanboi optimist) , but wont suck as hard as Fallout 76.

Even if Red Dead Redemption 2 sucks it’ll still be the best game of the year…..

Probably Red Dead. Gameplay reveal looked pretty standard, nothing special about it.

For me, I never really got into the first – so there are no expectations. When I get it on sale a few years from now (or in a Humble Monthly), I’ll probably give it a go.

Sale time is the ONLY time to buy games these days. Too farking expensive, otherwise.

I buy some indies, but mostly I just get my games from the Humble Monthly now. I don’t really buy anything outside of that. I don’t game as much as I used to.

RDR is the only game I’ve gotten all the SP achievements for. Loved every second of it (although I love Westerns in general anyway so that may have contributed to it)

Battlefield V = Fail (will see it on special within the first 6 months)

BO4 = Fail (wont see it on special because Activision)

Most 2K titles WWE/NBA etc = Most likely fail but wont be on special for a while

FIFA = Wont fail. The fanboi’s cant resist yet another football game (might see a smol sale)

Fallout 76 = I personally dont think it will last on the Bethesda launcher (will be on special within the first 6 months, and on steam for that 2nd ™ release)

Meh my expectations for any game release is the lowest its possibly been. Wooohoo cant wait for Devs trying to swindle me out of my cash after i have bought their overpriced software woooot

While i think it may be a good game, I’m almost certain Battlefield V is going to flop sales-wise. EA learned absolutely nothing from what happened with Titanfall 2 and once again sandwiched a release in between two of the biggest releases of the year.

After recently playing Titanfall 2, I must say, it’s a bloody travesty that it’s not more popular.

It’s so damn good, but it stood absolutely no chance being released just like a week after BF1. EA shot themselves in the foot so bad.

People didn’t really get hooked on the aged war thing either. For most of BF1’s lifetime, BF4 still had a larger playerbase. Now COD has also released a WWII game that didn’t take off.

BF5 is looking like one bad idea.

BF and CoD both give me the same impressions Assassins’ Creed did previously – not enough time between releases (although AC seems to be falling into that trap again). Now would have been the perfect time for the franchise to throw us a curveball – BC anyone!

Anthem is only in Feb, so technically doesn’t fall under the debate here – but yeah it remains to be seen how that’ll turn out. It’s looking good, but there are questions yet unanswered that need answering.
