Friday Debate: What do you want see from the next generation of consoles?

Microsoft may have originally wanted this generation to be the start of an all-digital future, but when the Xbox was announced, it may have been a little too soon. With the introduction and revision to Game Pass, we’re looking at the potential beginning of console ecosystems that do away with discs entirely.

It’s very possible that the next consoles ditch physical media. I’m not sure I want that. Anyway, it’s almost certain that we’ll soon see something from the big platform holders regarding their next systems. Both Sony and Microsoft have released their stop-gap systems in the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X respectively, and no doubt have R&D engineers looking towards the future.

Though I doubt we’ll see reveals this year, I’m almost certain that we’ll see a tease or two in 2019 about the PlayStation 5 or the next Xbox. What would you like to see from those systems?

Me? I’d really love for the idea of distinct console generations to go away – which is something Microsoft’s probably planning on given their strategies of late, though the jaguar-based hardware that powers the current consoles would no doubt hold technical innovation back.

What I don’t want from a next gen system is pure specs and horsepower though. There’s already too much emphasis on resolutions and frame rates and not enough on the games themselves. Lord knows we don;t need more digital dick-measuring contests.

But that’s me. What would you like to see from the next generation of consoles?
