Friday Debate – What’s the biggest video game disappointment of 2018?

DISAPPPPPOINTED

2018 may have been a brilliant year for gaming, but here’s the thing: Nobody wants to remember the good times. Instead, we’re hardwired to automatically complain when given the chance, and the year that was had no shortage of absolutely valid complaints. You look back at the last trip around the gigantic ball of flaming gas that gives us life, and there was plenty to hate on.

Darksiders III was a disappointing mess, Bethesda has had the worst November in history and EA’s microtransactions were somehow still absolute money-makers. I’m a half-full kind of guy myself, but it’s hard to keep a sunny dispostion when that glass happens to contain what can only be described as rancid mayonnaise that has been watered down with whatever’s left over in a Cape Town toilet.

So tell us below, what got your goat in 2018? What particular story had you raging? Maybe it was Spider-Man’s PuddleGate, maybe it was yet another story of Star Citizen fleecing fans with more exorbitantly-priced virtual starships. Hell, maybe you’re disappointed that despite all your planning and carefully laid traps, I’m somehow still alive…suckas.  Sound off below, and vent yourself free in our comments section. If you’re looking to enter 2019 with a fresh smile on your face, consider the section below our perfect platform for a controversy-flushing colonic.

As for me? I’m going to complain about how Final Fantasy 8 got shafted yet again, probably because of music rights. Screw you Square Enix, now I’ve got to go and buy a PS Vita if I want to play a mobile version of my favourite RPG ever.

I mostly ignore things like puddlegate and such, so the only thing that was a gaming disappointment for me in 2018 is not having enough time to play the many, many excellent games that released this year. Also, 2019 is looking to be a massive year for media in general, not just gaming. New Game of Thrones, new Boku no Hero Academia, new One Punch Man just to name a few. And the sheer amount of movies that is coming out next year is insane. I’m not going to have enough time go to work, it seems…

Having to drag myself back to Criticalhit.net as it is still the best gaming site ever. Not much can be said for the rest of the assholes visiting the site, but hey. Apparently you cannot choose your dysfunctional family.

Wait. I’m lying. I played Gravel. And I refunded it. So that seems to fit the bill.
      My final answer is Gravel.

Red Dead Redemption 2. I just wanted a fast-paced cowboy shoot ’em up & instead I have to refry a bunch of beans to make sure I don’t stave to death while my riding my horse for three hours to get anywhere.

      You’re lying. You love beans.
It’s a well known fact that aliens always eat beans when they visit Earth.

That would sort of be like buying Fallout because you’re in the mood for Doom though. It may be what you wanted but it was never really that genre though.

I was disappointed when God of War was finished.
I wanted more. Still want more. No other game I’ve played this year comes close.

    I have 2.

    1. Moonlighter. I loved the game. The art style, the gameplay, the shopkeeping. But… I wanted more. 4 hours is not enough. When it was done, I was like “that’s it?”. I’ve not been that sad in a long time. Major disappointment. There’s also very little replayability.

    2. The Witcher 3. Everyone raves about it. Critics, people, aliens, even some sentient rocks. But after a few hours I uninstalled what has to be the most boring and uninteresting experience for me. MEH. Waste of R200.

Ok for me – I actually often chose to lie on the couch and try to sleep instead of playing it. Like, literally sleeping was a more enticing prospect than playing it. lol.

Some folks might trigger when reading this, but I enjoyed Destiny 2 MUCH more.

I tried, but I can’t get past 5. I really. I had it there, in my installed list of 7 games, taunting me for months. And every time I looked at it, I just thought “I’ve so little interest in opening it. Why do I have it installed?”. Eventually I gave up and uninstalled it.

Mine would be AC Origins (Only played it this year). Still too formulaic and copy/paste to get immersed in. As for games released in 2018, I cannot think of any. Its been a good year. Picked up Farcry 5 for December, so things might change.

Farcry 5 was my disappointment, the open world is awesome, the story is cool-ish.
but the two together? each part detracted from the other.

AC Origins was actually my surprise of the year. It was better than I expected, a huge step up from Unity and Syndicate.
Story was still mega boring, but because of that, the distractions from the open world didnt detract from it.
