Friday Debate – What’s your “You” game?

There’s a number of methods out there that we use to define ourselves. Are we characterised by our kindness to others? Or perhaps our cruelty to fellow man? Do you feel that the best way to sum yourself up is to refer to movies? Maybe you’re defined by your wealth, your passion or your adventures that all contribute towards creating an image of yourself.

Here’s a question though: What’s your you game? I’m not talking a weekly rag mag though, but rather the one game that you champion above all others. That interactive slice of entertainment that you just can’t get enough of and that you wish more people were playing. What does that say about you in the grand scheme of things?

Over in the Critical Hit office, we had a good discussion on the games that we felt were best representative of us. Alessandro is easily a Journey guy, Noelle’s reputation as a Tomb Raider lady has slowly been threatened by her addiction to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Kervyn is a Battlefield fanboy for life and Tracy is the patron saint of Pokémon Go. I’d like to think that if there was a game that defined me, it’d be Metal Gear Rising, Batman Arkham Origins or Hitman but it’s probably Destiny.

And I’m alright with that! These are games of wonder and epic stories, colourful adventures and gritty quests which perfectly sums up the crew that I work with. What about you though? If you had to choose one game to define your life, personality and character by, what would it be?

The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of Critical Hit as an organisation.

    Do boardgames count?
    Because then Kingdom Death.
I really enjoy the setting (as intentionally sparse as it is, I admit), and the creature designs are very much “my aesthetic”. Gameplay definitely illicits a unique experience, as well, that has strongly influenced me.

How about tabletop roleplaying games? In which case, Mothership. I really enjoy running Horror, and it’s a wonderfully evocative system. (Edit: which reminds me, why DOESN’T this site have an RPG news section, considering the name? Is it because the RPG news world is a maze of announcements of unsure importance read only by a small niche of consumers who tend to already know what they want, like Boardgame news?)

As for digital games… Homeworld is pretty close to my heart, and was also hugely influential – though I’ve only thought about it a lot recently (with the Fig campaign and the recently announced TTRPG). There’s also Bloodborne to a lesser degree, since that also overlaps with my literary interests. Its aesthetic is why I jumped into it, and not Dark Souls.

I would like to say No Man’s Sky, since it’s been such a success story in terms of turning things on their head and producing what is, currently, a fantastic game.

But, I’d probably be a Terraria person. I’ve spent well over 1000 hours in that game and it’s the one game that I never uninstall, for any reason, because sometimes you just want to go and explore/craft in a delightful 2D world. Then there’s the wiring system and pixel-art community and honestly there’s so much in the base game for almost anyone to enjoy and sink hours into. And the mods add so much longevity as well, with loads of options and content for all tastes. It’s just a massive game that can suck hundreds of hours out of you, and you won’t even miss them.

Yes, even stumbled upon an old note from the 2 guys who made Geralt drink a potion in The Witcher 2 that confirms they might have cured Geralt of his sterility…meaning my Geralt might be Daddy to allot of kids in Novigrad/Skellige/Toussaint

I’ve read basically all the notes and I can’t seem to remember this. Care to tell me where you got it good sir?

Also, I’m curious to know if you’ve completed all of the achievements yet. Seeing that you’re on your 9th play through.

That note is kinda difficult to find and the only way to do so is to import a save file from The Witcher 2 where you met the 2 scholars and excepted the quest to drink their potion….You will find the note in Oxenfurt near the academy close to the pille of books and stuff thats being burned…Where the 2 guards stand when Shani takes you to see the old man about the master of mirrors …G.O.D…..as for achievements i have no idea…i have the disc version and never play’d the game connected to the GOG servers….just donwloaded the updates from GOG and disconnected…back then when i had a small cap on my internet….achievements dont bother me and such…just wana play the game.

What an interesting question, I would say the two games I best identify with (or at least the games that have absolutely consumed my life) has to be a) TERRARIA and b) WARFRAME. I really don’t know which one, I would say is the “ME” game.

Yep, I get motion sickness in a lot of games, especially fast paced games such as warframe, Overwatch, Fortnight, Paladins, even BF and COD. Warframe it only came on after the release of the Arc wing. They did something to the graphics that triggered me so badly. I can’t even walk in my ship without wanting to puke. I spend a long time discussing it with the game devs – I sent them an email about it, we had a long chat and apparently after the graphics update back then about 1% of their player base was affected by it. Most fast paced games triggers it for me unfortunately. I get away with it in Div 2 by not playing in the Dark Zone. I try to avoid games with PVP – Even in Destiny 2, I take it easy (aka I am the slowest player in the group at all times so as not to trigger my motion sickness – Its why I game for fun and not professionally – I avoid raiding as much as possible so that I don’t let teams down)

I know it’s not the best of the Diablo titles, but I am still very much in love with Diablo 3, especially after getting the Reaper of Souls expansion which just improved the experience, and I boot it up quite regularly (I’ll be jamming it again this weekend). That said, other “me” games are Operation Flashpoint and Quake (the whole series, yeah!)

I wanna say something epic like Metal Gear, Hitman or Monster Hunter but I’d have to go with Tekken!!

It just has so much meaning to me. Used to sneak into town as a 13 yr old to play the first one in the arcade with the money I made selling calculaters n shit, bought magazines for the moves, witnessed it’s growth, won contests, beat laarnie kids who could afford playstations back in the day and so on…

There’s just a beauty of having a puncher’s chance. Do the basics right with the right timing and you can take out guys trying to do fancy combos n what not so definitely Tekken for me.

Used to be Warframe (MR 20-something) until I splurged on Destiny 2 Deluxe and now my second annual pass (Shadowkeep). Never looked back. Titan memes are in my blood and I wish I’d bought the first game now that I know what I missed out on.

I can decimate with the other 2 classes but I reiterate… Titans and punching just sings to my DNA.
