Next-gen is officially here! Well in my house at least, because y’all are going to have to wait two more weeks still. I’m busy testing out the Xbox Series X and Series S for an upcoming review on those consoles, and while I’m excited for the new games arriving on those systems, I’m feeling nostalgic as well. There are a number of franchises that have been left to rot over the last generation of gaming, and I think it’s high-time that they got a revival.
Of course there are the obvious ones like spy-thriller No One Lives Forever or a reason to not have money in the form of Disney Infinity, but hand on my chest, I swear to you I’d love to see Prototype make a comeback. That Activision sandbox was the stuff of legend during the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 days, an oddly-timed counter to InFAMOUS that is perhaps a bit too on the nose with its story of a viral outbreak handing one lucky bastard all the superpowers he could ask for, in today’s current climate.
Kervyn also mentioned another game that has been a fan favourite since it launched in 2010: Split/Second. I’ve actually just popped some cash onto Xbox Live for it after he waxed lyrical about it, and after seeing footage of a race where you can reign destruction on enemies, I’m kicking myself for having never played a racing game that was clearly designed by Michael Bay.
At this point, you’re probably furiously typing in the comments that you’d like Soul Reaver to make a return. How about Dino Crisis, since Capcom’s been all in on remakes? Maybe even Bloody Roar if you’re really wishing for a fighting game that was the bastard child of Tekken and Animorphs. There’s so many treasured franchises out there that deserve a big budget rebirth on Xbox Series X and PS5, so sound off below!
Don’t just tell us which game you’d like to see return, tell us how you’d handle its resurrection. Let’s slip on some rose-tinted glasses and look fondly back at the awful past.

Ultima / Ultima Underworld. I think they could do some magical things in an open-world RPG like the Witcher if they adapted a story similar to Ultima V, i.e. linked to the virtues etc

Mickey Mouse Castle of illusion and QuackShot. Man those were some good days way way back in the day. Dont know how good they would be on next gen but it would be great to see.

I’m gonna second Infamous, I loved those games for what they were, but I’d definitely improve the story so it was more than just cathartic god-complex gameplay and give the fodder more character+ improve the AI to add more weight/thought to the slaughter. Also, a heavy hard rock and metal soundtrack, everything else has gone hip hop

The SWAT series.
It is a fantastic premise firstly, going in and sorting out a hostile situation with AI driven random events. You could make it super relevant to today’s world by putting in things like:
Bad intel.
Incorrect warrants.
Media fallout.
Unprofessional colleagues.

These games were a lot of fun back in the day. I reckon if they made a new one in today’s climate they would probably give the Evolve or Predator treatment which would just ruin the single player aspect.

“Quake, a version with a story.” – I think you missed the point of Quake and Quake 2 did not have a great story arc so I’m happy it turned to Arena FPS as it is still the best 1v1 game on the planet. DOOM (2016) and Eternal have rectified all that Quake was missing, even improving on the NIN soundtrack.
I respect Quake for what it was at the time, a classic that lived in it’s own space and evolved naturally.

I would love to see a remake of Heavenly sword. That game was amazing and it had really awesome mechanics for a early in life PS3 game. How about a Matrix game again, now with more powerful consoles that could have a lot of potential and if done right (aka Middle-Earth) it could be really good. And while we are on racing games, i really enjoyed the arcade sim crossover of NFS shift. Now let me run away before the Grand Turismo fans get their pitch forks out. Happy Friday all!

Space Marine. I would celebrate by building AND painting a full Slaanesh Army, finishing my GK Army, and finishing my Khorne Army.
I was lucky enough that the supplier F’ed up BTGames’ order back in the day, and my order got auto-upgraded to the CE. Also got the DoW 3 CE, so would buy the CE for Space Marine 2 as well!

The definitive answer is a very small number of games due to the following (according to era):
R-Type and Defender were already fixed with Resogun
Streetfighter is still going along with Mortal Kombat (I only play the former though)
Tetris can’t be fixed as the original is still just too good (yes I have played Tetris Effect)
Star Wars (SNES) was fixed with Fallen Order
Every driving game ever made has been improved upon.
Every RTS since DUNE has been improved upon.
Every sports title has been improved upon.
Double Dragon is available in many different forms (Streets of Rage 2 being the best)
We already have DOOM and Quake Champions.
I’d look at the following though:
Choplifter (Arcade)
FIST 2 (C64)
Infiltrator (nevermind – Metal Gear Solid now)
Desert/Jungle/Urban Strike Series (SNES/Megadrive)
