Friday Debate: Which October games are worth your money and time?

Games are expensive. As a hobby, gaming’s probably one of the cheaper ones if we’re honest, but trying to keep up with the zeitgeist can be daunting for any wallet. Traditionally, November’s been the one month a year where everything goes to hell. All of the games are released, and people who like to stay up to date with gaming are faced with a month of great gaming – but 2 minute noodles for dinner every night.

That’s’ changed over the years. October is now as much of a powerhouse of a month, and this year it’s being taken to a completely new level. The number of “must-have” games in October is mind-boggling, and it’s going to take a juggling act to not just balance the fiscal side of things, but the temporal one as well. Here’s a look at what’s coming this month:

  • Battle Chasers: Nightwar (PC, PS4, Switch) – October 3
  • Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (PS4, Xbox One) – October 3
  • Forza 7 (PC, Xbox One) – October 3
  • Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 3
  • Empyre: Lords of the Sea Gates (PC) – October 4
  • Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy (Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy) (3DS) – October 6
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of War (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 10
  • Age of Empires Definitive Edition (PC) – October 10
  • Arktika.1 (Oculus Rift) – October 10
  • The Evil Within 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 13
  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole – (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 17
  • Elex (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 17
  • Rogue Trooper Redux (PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One) – October 17
  • Etrian Odyssey 5: Beyond the Myth (3DS) – October 17
  • Axiom Verge: Multiverse Edition (PS4, Vita, Wii U, Switch) – October 17
  • WWE 2K18 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 17
  • Gran Turismo Sport (PC, PS4) – October 17
  • Cities: Skylines – Green Cities (PC) – October 19
  • Syberia (Switch) – October 20
  • Fire Emblem Warriors (New 3DS, Switch) – October 20 EU
  • Destiny 2 (PC) – October 24
  • Road Rage (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 24
  • Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon (PS4, PC, Switch) – October 24
  • Assassin’s Creed: Origins (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 27
  • Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) – October 27
  • Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 27
  • Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back (PC, PS4) – October 31

Of course, not every game there is worth playing, but so many are – and October 27, in particular, is a nightmare of a day. Assassin’s Creed, Super Mario and Wolfenstein? Yeah, I think I’m busy that day.

Given that gaming costs a fortune, and October’s such a busy month – what are you planning on playing? Given my own empty wallet, there’s just one game I’m buying next month, and it’s one that features a certain former plumber’s nipples.

It’s all about those seasons every 3 months. Then you need to max level and then the game truly begins 😛

Story wise Path of Exile has it beat pretty badly. D3 is just more fun competitively end game.

Even though there are a quite a few games on that list that make me want to shudder with pleasure, I am a patient man and I can wait a few months for them to come down in price so that I can afford them.

I very much tend to avoid Day 1 purchases these days. Not just because of price.
I want to see that the review is good and I also prefer that the bugs are patched out.

Yeah, nothing like forking out a crap load of money and being disappointed two days later….

But, for example, Mass Effect 3 Collectors edition, delivered to my house at 18:00 on day of release. We looked at the maps, the books, the game installed. It was WELL worth it. really.

But for every one of those…..

The best day 1 release I ever got was Skyrim Collector’s edition. With the fancy artbook and the 12″ Alduin statue. Best R400 buck I ever spent.

Not a single day 1 purchase since has managed to live up to that since.

I’ve made two day one purchases this year – Steamworld Dig 2 & Hellblade. Very happy indeed with both. Also helps that both combined cost less than the regular AAA release price.

AAA’s are far too pricey for day 1, IMO.

“Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen (PS4, Xbox One) – October 3”

Easily a want to purchase, but day one? Not a chance. in 3 months time, get on sale. Already own it.

“Middle-earth: Shadow of War (PC, PS4, Xbox One) – October 10”

    Again, get on sale. really.

“Age of Empires Definitive Edition (PC) – October 10”

Hmm. no idea.Maybe the nostalgia forces a buy later in the month?

For the rest? Yeah…. um. Am I getting old? not even heard of some of them…..
