PSN Name

What’s in a name? Plenty, especially if your online handle happens to be a true reflection of who you are. With that being said, there are only so many combinations of words that can be used to string together a clever handle for online fun, which is most likely the reason why your friends list is currently populated with catchy monikers such as xXx_YoMomma95_xXx.

Well here’s some good and bad news for anyone who is looking to leave that horrific past behind them as if it were a MySpace page. Good, because PlayStation 4 owners can finally swap their custom nickname for something better, and bad because today is the last day I’ll ever be able to make fun of Alessandro for choosing StArKiLlER_360_NoscopeXXxxXXx as his nom de guerre.

According to the PS Blog, the process is easy enough, but will only be valid for PS4 profiles:

PlayStation 4

  • Step 1: From your PS4 go to [Settings].
  • Step 2: Select [Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Profile] > [Online ID].
  • Step 3: Enter an Online ID of your choice or choose from one of the suggestions.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the change.

Web browser

  • Step 1: Sign in to your account on the PlayStation Network and select PSN Profile in the menu.
  • Step 2: Select the Edit button that’s next to your Online ID.
  • Step 3: Enter an Online ID of your choice or choose from one of the suggestions.
  • Step 4: Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the change.

More details can be found in the source link, but for anyone who has any particular questions, here’s the meat of how the name change will work for you:

  • The first ID change is free, after which you’ll need to fork out £7.99/€9.99 for any future changes. PS Plus members can do so for £3.99/€4.99
  • When changing your online ID, you’ll have the option to display your old ID next to your new ID in your Profile for 30 days, in case you want friends to find you
  • You can revert back to your old ID for free so long as it doesn’t violate any terms of service
  • Your old ID is locked to your account
  • For a list of PS4 games that support the name change feature, check here
  • For games that might have some critical issues, check here

Easy enough. So, plan to change your online handle?Feel free to do so tomorrow. Just for the love of Kaz, don’t call yourself something even worse in the process. yOu’rE NoT ImPrEsSiNg aNyBoDy bY TyPiNg yOuR NaMe lIkE ThIs.

For years I was dead set on updating mine, but, my Destiny group all know me as my current name, so I don’t think I’ll do the swop. At least not yet.

My eldest brother son is: Ysterpaal… This after I repeated threatened him with grievous bodily harm if he chooses something stupid!! I explained for a week long that you can’t change the name and will be stuck with it forever. So think of what 30 year old you want to be called by his friends while playing online. And he f&cking chose Ysterpaal… The youth really is a horrid bunch of idiots aren’t they!?!?
