Funcom stands by subscription model

Funcom’s new conspiracy-theory laden MMO The Secret World is not doing especially well. One reason for that, beyond the fact that it’s a pretty dull game, is that MMO’s without subscriptions – like Guild Wars 2 – has made many realise that there’s no need to pay monthly. Many expected Funcom to adopt a free-to play model following the MMO’s lack of success. They’re not.

According to Funcom, The Secret World wont be going F2P “anytime soon.”

“It’s a fast changing business and we have to adapt ourselves,” communications director Erling Ellingsen said to Eurogamer. “But right now there’s currently no plans.”

“It’s really important to us with the business model we’ve chosen,” added director Joel Bylos. “It sounds very emotional, but I almost feel like we need to prove that this business model has not gone the way of the dinosaur by delivering content constantly to people, and making people feel like there’s value in it.”

I think with so much competition already embracing free-to-play, subscription based games (and even retail games, further down the line) are going to have a harder and harder time trying to get people to part with money on a monthly basis.

I…sort of, maybe enjoyed the first few hours of Secret world before it became terribly repetitive – and you’ll have to do a heck of a lot to convince me to subscribe.
