Gaikai streaming coming to the PS4…but not for you

The ‘Cloud’ seems to be everyone’s favourite buzzword at the moment. Xbox has done a lot to promote the “power” of their cloud, but PlayStation hasn’t quite been so chest-thumpey about their own cloud-based service, Gaikai. In the near future, you’ll be able to stream PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and even PlayStation 3 games to the next-generation PlayStation 4. Unless you live in Europe.

Speaking to Edge, SCEE President and CEO Jim Ryan explained the lack of a Gamescom announcement about the PlayStation 4’s own cloud.

Yeah sure and I’ll tell you why is wasn’t touched upon last night. So the plan is to begin with North America next year and the plan is to provide a streaming service that will allow for PS3 content initially to be streamed to firstly PS4 then PS Vita and then PS3.

And so that will happen in 2014 in North America initially. Now, and I touched upon these issues of broadband in Europe during the presentation – Europe is of course on the roadmap for that service to be deployed at some point in the future, but for reasons outside of our control we don’t yet have a timeline for it. So at a show which is now pretty global in its reach but primarily aimed at a European audience, we didn’t really want to start talking about the virtues of this great cloud-based service without knowing exactly when it’ll come to Europe.

So, if Europe’s internet is throwing a spanner in the works, how will South African broadband stand up? With average speeds of 20Mbps in the EU compared with our average of 4Mbps, will South Africa get to take advantage of the hyped up cloud power?  Well, Probably not.

I must say, this has been my concern with a lot of the cool features we’ve been seeing – multiplayer, fantastic worlds and all the rest are looking great with new technology. However, line speeds here are slower than the rest of the world – not sure how happy I’ll be playing The Division or TitanFall when lag gets me killed.

Why do you think I have been hating on these next gen consoles for the last year. Anybody can see that we are going to be paying an arm and a leg for shit we cant use… OR DO NOT WANT TO USE Kinect 2 my bum.

But I am happy with SONY trying to please as many countries as possible considering SONY owns Europe, Asia and Africa.

The ONE is for the ONE country that rules the world and noONE else. ELITIST shit.

80million 360s sold but they only want the 48million who have LIVE. More money MADE THRU SERVICES and not gamers.

Either way I really am not interested in the next gen until I am satisfied that the REPEAT of the first 3 years of this CLUSTER FUCK 7th generation is out of the way.

You know it. Also, I go back on my word. It was the first footage of the next gen that got me excited. I even posted that the better version between the Infinite and The PS4 would be my deciding factor on what console to get.

SO… Lets wait and see if The Witcher 3 looks better on the PS4.

Dude… not the US. Rather emigrate to Canada. If you stay in Vancouver, you can go visit the yanks in Seattle over the weekends (it’s a short drive across the border)… but the US itself isn’t a step up from South Africa, especially not middle America. Seriously, some parts of middle America is like Upington.

Not many Tornado’s in the Northeast, where Jim is discussing colder weather (Though, it should be mentioned the past 2 winters have been historically warm). Haven’t had a Tornado in my area in my lifetime, though NY or NJ ‘may’ have had one during Hurricane Irene or Sandy.

Tornado zones are the southern half of the eastern seaboard, extending westward to Texas. But, they’re extremely rare in the northeast.

So…..you’re saying the entire Northern Hemisphere gets about 3 hours of sunshine on a good day? I sincerely hope you’re joking, or asking your teachers why they failed you so badly.

In Africa we’re only taught: One Banana, Two Bananas, Three Bananas, NO MONEY FOR Four!. It’s like how Africa is a country and New Zealand is a province of Australia. Of COURSE, the whole of Northern Hemisphere doesn’t just get 3 hours of sunshine “on a good day”….

So? Cloud streaming for backwards compatibility is like using a nuclear reactor to power a lightbulb. Eating chicken skin and throwing away the chicken. Buying a bus so you can drive yourself to work. I could go on. Whatever their reasoning: Laziness, locking users into a service, controlling their content. All of which will undoubtedly give them undeserved profit.

PsiCoRe does not approve. As mentioned last week, not a fan of the Console community who will ignorantly support this (See link). The Xbox One provides a more logical, efficient advantage to cloud processing. It’s just up to the developers to properly code for it. Why an Xbox 360 can’t benefit from it is anyone’s guess though. Why do console developers re-release their games with each generation when PC/Mac games merely require patches when migrating from PPC to x86 architecture? All of the above indicates that developers are more likely to use this technology as an excuse to screw the customer over instead of benefiting them.

good point made in this article, its one of the main reasons why im not jumping on the next gen bandwagon so soon and playing the waiting game to see how things pan out in a few years, so for now I wont be getting a ps4 and xb1, and staying away from Titanfall (I learnt my lesson with Diablo 3) who knows, give us a few years with this generation of consoles and maybe our broadband will be a lot better to handle all this cloudiness to its full potential but not so right now…

we have the potential just telkom doesnt want to use it…. You see they keep other companies from coming in thus no competetion thus we have to pay their price… I am not sure about this but Botswana has better internet than us. I mean if thats the case then we got alot to learn…

very true – plus, building infrastructure is a nightmare. I’m stuck with iBurst despite living in a fancy shmancy area because i’m in a small area that isn’t covered by anything else! when I asked when they might be able to get me a telkom line, i was told not to expect anything for at least the next year. gee, thanks

No one should be surprised, neither service was going to be ready for launch. It takes time to put these things into place, regardless of the infrastructure they have to work with. Gaikai’s actually already out there, the problem is it’s based off Nvidia GPU’s (Kepler), and with the AMD heavy hardware, it’ll take some tweaking to iron out.

Beyond that, at least Sony’s being honest here. They’re straight up telling you that certain places throughout the world, won’t be able to utilize it. That should tell everyone something, especially those fawning over the as yet to be set up, cloud network for Microsoft.

If Sony’s system, that’s already largely in place, won’t be available due to broadband issues, exactly what does that mean for Microsofts? Maybe next gen, or next next gen, will the cloud play any significant role in computation for gaming. But certainly not this gen.
