Game Exec forgets which company he works for

CVG has been chatting to a senior gaming industry executive about how the credit crunch may affect gaming over this holiday season and he had the following to say.

“As long as we can generate excitement, then we will be less affected than other industries”

Which is just marketing talk that makes no sense… however he goes on to say

“We’re getting to the point where price becomes more important”

Which I fully agree with, beacuse at the moment the spotlight is firmly on our finances and we should be cutting costs where ever we can. So what is wrong with this picture?

The issue here is who said the above… No it wasn’t some Microsoft exec mouthing off about their latest price cuts nor was it anyone from Nintendo discussing the relatively cheap Wii.

It was actually Kaz Hirai from Sony who is meant to be pushing the PS3… the most expensive of the three consoles. He then goes on to say

“The answer is yes, if you’re asking, ‘Are these the prices we’re going with this Christmas?”

So after saying the price point was really important he goes on to state that they won’t be dropping their high price… someone give the man a cookie..

Yes the PS3 is arguably the best value for money but the fact is that if you want HD gaming then you can get the 360 for half the price… you can’t argue with that. Sony really shouldn’t be helping Microsoft here by pushing the price point argument.

If you look at it from a South African point of view, the Wii is actually the most expensive console around. You’re definately not getting what you pay for…
