Games Invite Players to Make Pacts with the Devil, Says Family Newspaper

Satan

There’s always something for fundamentalist religious zealots to use as a scapegoat for the perceived societal moral decline. Throughout history, all manner of things have pinpointed by extremists as the source of evil; Books, Music, Film, TV, and the scapegoat du’jour – videogames.

According to The bulletin, A Philadelphia-based family newspaper, we’re being inundated with “satanically-themed video games that target God and Christianity, invite players to make pacts with the devil, and elevate Satan to hero status”

They interviewed the aptly-surnamed 32 Year old gamer Lance Christian who said that the status quo “has been going on for the last 10 years, but especially in the most recent games”. “I feel that the devil has a new tool to work with in this age of technology, and the majority of adults in a position of responsibility are left in the dark,” Christian said.

Notably Evil games? (These may be considered spoilers, so proceed with caution)

  • Tecmo’s Deception: Invitation To Darkness-Players “make an unholy pact and sell their soul to Satan in exchange for power” with the object of the game being to ensure the resurrection of Satan and obtain his power.
  • Nocturne—A game in which the hero (a demon) destroys the three Archangels St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, then goes on to destroy God.
  • Shadow Hearts—The hero uses his power to intercept and destroy God and “save the world.”
  • Dragon Age: Origins—The game revolves around the story of God going mad and cursing the world. A witch attacks believers and players can “have sex” with her in a pagan act called “blood magic” so she can “give birth to a god.” Another scenario allows players to have sex with a demon in exchange for a boy’s soul.

Also listed as being particularly evil were Dante’s Inferno, Guitar Hero, Devil Summoner, Koudelka, Trapt, Bayonetta, and Darksiders. All of which are making play for the eternal condemnation of your soul. Obviously.

Most of the gods dispensed with in the above games aren’t even the traditional Judeo-Christian god – but rather fictional or pantheon gods. As a certified heathen, I don’t really see the fuss – and my non-fundamentalist Christian friends don’t either. Logical people, you see, are quite capable of separating reality from fantasy.

No, and I don’t believe in an afterlife. If you see the fuss, that’s cool – I’m not judging. You’re free to believe whatever you wish – as I am.

I agree with evilredzombie to a point, Yanks are a primitive race and seem to be easily manipulated…being subjected to these forms of entertainment seem to stimulate their mostly dominating primal side of the brain. On that note however I do agree with Geoff, in that, to each his own.

As a certified NON-heathen I don’t find Geoff’s point of view that appalling. Heck, just read the newspaper each day. It’s soul destroying stuff.

As for games like Dragon age (the only one on the list I’ve played), that guy is smoking his socks. It’s a FANTASY STORY set in a FANTASY world with a Creator that is in no way shape or form the God of the Bible. As for The witch and the baby thing, unless you’re roleplaying your character as evil, when that situation pops up you’re not comfortable with it… believe me.

    Burn the heathen 🙂

Will this never end? What is next?

There should be a IQ test before you can buy a game, write about a game, or , happy thought, breed…

I saw no mention of the god of War series.
It just seems like a newspaper trying to fill column space with sensationalist BS. Just a means to sell newspapers and get noticed.

Not surprising really these guys believe the world is only +-6000 years old of course they believe the magic box is telling their kids to love the devil.

They must of run out of books to burn or Sesame Street songs to play backwards.
