If you were gaming this weekend, chances were pretty good that you were dipping into the awesome world of the latest Deus Ex game. And if you were an American wanting to to get your hands on the PC version that came bundled with an OnLive code for some free gameplay, then you were most likely swearing at gaming shop franchise GameStop for forcibly removing those codes, and offering no compensation towards you.
Now, GameStop has come forward with an apology, as well as a gesture of goodwill to those gamers affected.
CEO Paul Raines sent the following message to customers, in an attempt to placate the angry masses following last weeks PR disaster.
Dear GameStop customer,
Earlier this week, GameStop removed a competitor’s coupon from standard edition PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a recent release by Square Enix. We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor’s offer. We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.
For your inconvenience, we would like to offer you a free $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase. We want to earn back your trust and confidence in the GameStop experience. Please bring in this email and your store receipt or order confirmation from GameStop.com and present it to a Game Advisor.

Its nice to see GameStop making amends towards gamers over the whole issue, but at the same time, there is no admission of guilt in the letter, and its going to be quite a while before GameStop manages to repair their now tarnished image in the eyes of once loyal customers.
The fact is, that by attempting to edge out their competition, GameStop has only managed to make them appear as a better alternative at the end of the day.
