Indie Advent

Advent calendars terrify me – are we really that close to the holidays? I just checked my calendar and it’s only three more weeks of work for me. Well, less than that thanks to public holidays. Now a bunch of gaming studios are getting involved in bringing holiday cheer with free things for all the days until Xmas.

The Advent of Indies is an advent calendar dedicated to 23 indie developers, each giving a unique prize for each day. The 24th present will include a big prize draw. Each day we could get a game or soundtrack or some sort of gift in preparation for the Holiday Steam Sale Christmas. It’s a very nice initiative, promoting indie studios in the buildup to the time when people buy a ton of games. Plus, I love getting stuff for free, even if it’s just game soundtracks or wallpapers.

Apparently Vlambeer, Might and Delight and a range of other excellent developers are part of the celebration, so there might be some exciting things to look forward to in the coming days. Way to build up the momentum for Christmas.

For those of you who don’t celebrate Xmas for whatever reason, you can still enjoy free things for advent. I know this time of year can be very Xmas-focused, which doesn’t bring cheer to everyone, but I like this kind of initiative – regardless of personal beliefs and desire to celebrate particular holidays, free indie presents are always welcome for me. What do you think – does this beat some cheap chocolate hidden behind paper doors, or do you prefer a traditional advent calendar?

I’ve only ever seen one advent calendar. But that was in the movie Bad Santa with Bill Bob Thorton. One of the funniest christmas movies ever.

I remember this scene. It’s where the little black dude berates him. “You’re an emotional fucking cripple. Your soul is dog shit. Every single fucking thing about you is ugly.”

Chocolates. Imagine buying a bag of Quality Street & half your favourite ones are missing because they’re sold separately or because you didn’t buy it quickly enough to have them included.

Glad to see. I sometimes get in trouble because I say things like that. Those that know me would know that I would never, ever, do any of the things I say or even that I do not actually believe them. Things like this sort of fit my dry sense of humour. Even if I am the only one to see the humour
