GaymerX, the gaming convention that was conceived to be a more inclusive space for gamers, just wasn’t inclusive enough, apparently. The convention organisers, who hope to fund a third one, have changed its name so as to not offend and exclude people who aren’t gay.
It’s now called GX: Everyone Games, and its organisers are hoping to drum up enough cash to bring it to San Francisco at the end of this year. They’re hoping to raise the $80 000 necessary through Kickstarter.
The organisers are hoping the new name will help it appeal to an even broader community; the whole LGBTQ+ spectrum, as well as those not in sexual minorities.
“We’ve become more and more aware that not all of our attendees identify with the ‘gaymer’ label,” wrote the organisers on the official Kickstarter page.
“And while we love all our gay dude friends, we realize there are more people than that who want an awesome space to hang with their friends in a safe and diverse environment. We want to make sure we represent everyone who feels like they’ve been left out of mainstream gamer culture.”
This is more like it. One of the problems I had with GaymerX in the first place was that it fought against its own ideology; instead of being an inclusive convention with the goal of aiding tolerance, it was further segregating people.
Of course, there are more than enough conventions and events that cater to cis-gendered males (almost exclusively), but I think the end goal here should be full acceptance of one another, and not just the proliferation of safe places. This is a good first step.

True, if a bit backwards thinking.
“Quick, our good idea pissed people off instead of doing what we want, now what?”

This is the problem. Gaming in its true form has fkall to do with your sexuality, your gender or lack thereof, you weight ( except if you do cosplay ) your looks or political affiliation. Its insecure little fairies like these that ruin the gaming scene with their BS. NEVER, have I seen ANY gaming clan ask you your iq, sexual preference or shoesize.

So fat people cannot cosplay, is that what you are saying?

no, who said fat? If you want to cosplay the incredible hulk and you are built like a stick, you will end up looking like a green cocktail gherkin.

You know the weird thing is how people always just need to name it something… Just BE! Do what you want and go on with your life and don’t be an asshole to people…
But no… They have to make up words and classifications and labels. Wow it gets old real quick.

Good. The whole segregation thing wasn’t doing anything helpful. It’s like naming other conventions to be “for heteros”.
