Late last night I was chatting to Nick about the upcoming Gears of War 3 and the universal opinion (of the two of us) was that Gears 2’s multiplayer was disappointing and they completely screwed up the shotgun.
We had other differing opinions about how the Lancer worked in Gears 2 compared to 1 but by far our biggest complaints were around the shotgun and the multiplayer in general.
Thankfully Cliff Beszinski was listening in to our conversation and has come out and very candidly stated
“Straight out of the box, Gears of War 2’s multiplayer in regards to matchmaking was very very clunky and very very seldom worked. That’s something we take very very seriously and feel very very bad about.â€
That wasn’t enough for us to pass on our forgiveness to Cliff just yet so he continued on and mentioned that Epic are working on ensuring the matchmaking takes into consideration your region and tries to match you up with locals before throwing you up against some Americans on a 100Mb pipe sitting on top of the server.
The problem with region filtering is that our smaller regions often won’t have enough people to play against and then we will have to revert back to the American userbase and since their matchmaking can easily find enough Americans to play against it doesn’t really want to let us join.
He then went on to acknowledge the mistakes they made with the Shotgun in Gears of War 2, in Gears 2 they pushed the tactical cover-based shooter style of game and then subsequently realised that people actually preferred the arcadey type gameplay of Gears 1.
You want to think that your lone soldier can take out the entire enemy team if he is quick enough on the trigger and that is something that was missing in Gears 2.
Gears 3 will hopefully bring it back as well as including 2 new weapons.
Sawn off Shotgun – Short range, huge damage for gibbing multiple locusts at a time.
Pendulum Lancer – You get a blade instead of a chainsaw and the gun kicks like a mule.
They will also be introducing many more execution modes, which don’t mean much to me at all since you quickly realise pulling of execution modes is dangerous and only to be used in safe environments, as well as changes to the cover system.
All in all I am hugely excited for Gears 3 and the sounds coming out of Epic games are all reassuring me that they are going to get it right again this time around.

In most cases i respect peoples opinions, but honestly if you like gears 2 your a fucking random ass bad kid who was just to shity or too impatient to learn how to be good at GOW1. ANYBODY CAN PICK UP THE FUCKING CONTROLLER ON GEARS 2 AND DO FUCKING GOOD. ITS THE WORST FUCKING FAIL OF THE CENTURY. Gears wasnt my life, but i liked it so much it was the only online game i played, played competitively as well. I had so many great times on the game that i still play it. 2006 to now, and will untill gears 3 comes out. If GEARS 3 is not the same as GEARS 1 or even resembles the multiplayer bullshit of gears 2, i will never, ever buy an epic game again. Gears of war 2 release crushed my expectations and i broke it in half and went on a fucking rampage. KIDS WHO MOVE IN GAME LIKE THEY HAVE NO THUMBS ARE FUCKING BEATING ME BECAUSE THEY PRESS B, THE FUCKING SHOTGUN DOESNT WORK ETC ETC. SHUT THE FUCK UP IF YOU THINK GEARS 2 was good, you obviously didnt take the time to play gears 1 when it was at its prime.
AND CLIFFY, if you by chance read this, your lancer is not as original or as cool as you think, it is not the new “lightsaber” WE WANT THE FUCKING NASHER BACK AND THE GNARLY ASS SNIPE BLINDFIRES MOTHER FUCKER!

Gears 2 sucks hard.
Juts to keep it unanimous… Gears 1, despite the many flaws, remains the GREATEST ONLINE SHOOTER of the current generation. Certainly a contender for the all time slot. I played it on the weekend just gone, May 23rd 2010, and ran into some old friends and had a ball for several hours. It is just faster, more fluid and much more FUN!!!
Although, the active downs by poor snipers and that basic inconsistent hit detection with the shotty do take away from the game a bit. But tweaking the weapons a bit, especially the lancer, would lift Gears 1 to a whole new level.

Look, the fact of the matter is that you would have to be extremely strong willed and stubborn not to get gears 3 if you got either or both of the prequels. Face it, Cliffy B’s got you by the balls; he could put out the biggest pile of shit game and you would STILL buy it just to see how it all goes down in the end. And fair play to him!

Gears 1 had only map exploits but the combat was great, Gears 2 has many crappy bugs.
1 thing I still can’t wrap my head around is in Gears 2 when you get stunned and then press B you stun yourself but it still works fine in Gears 1 WTF?!!

i completely agree with EVERYTHING you have said. i know the disappointment you felt with gears 2 because gears 1 was a gem. the shotgun in gears 2 is rubbish and the sniper is shittier as well. like you gears 1 was the only online game i played, why they took matchmaking lobbies in i will never know! there was nothing better than searching for the map YOU wanted to play and set how many rounds. (Warzone 8 rounds Canals etc) they fucked up so bad it irritates the shit outta me. it wasnt broke epic so it didnt need fixing!

Your a fucking idiot, I was and still am a huge fan of GoW1, but GoW2 did not suck. Just because they made the game more tactical, it doesn’t suck. The graphics are better, the campaign, and everything else other then the multiplayer at launch, but it is still better then GoW1 overall. Multiplayer isn’t everything and one thing you need to realize, is that when in action, your actually around 2% faster in GoW2 compared to GoW1, your just slower compared to GoW1 when your not in action and that was accidently brought into GoW2s multiplayer. Your rant is rude and un-necessary and you have no facts to back it up. GoW2 made it so everyone used something other then a shotgun constantly, which is better then GoW1. A
Also, when is the last fucking time you played GoW2? The chainsaw stun is back and I would have to say its a lot easier to play GoW1 multiplayer because the shotgun is overpowered and any “noob” can use it.

Man gears of war 2 shotgun was terrible… the story mode was great… but face it… this is an online game not a RPG lmao… Gears 1 was and is still the best game out there in my book… what game you know.. when u having a bad day and you come home to play gears…. it makes your day alot better??? lol…. Gears 2 was a disgrace to Epic games !!!! and I just seen video on youtube about the shotgun and it looks the same?? If its the same… you will not have big sales like you did Gears 1!!

ok gears 2… i loved the story but the multiplayer did suck. not as good as gears 1. shotgun blowed and the sniper wouldnt pop the head. unless you was host then you where a god…. hey i got a good idea.. howabout dedicated servers! that would be awsome, that way no lil bitch can think hes the shit because he can shoot me 1 sec. faster than i can shoot him. its not really fair if his bullets hit me and mine go thru him

dedicated servers is a must for gears 3 and i would love for something to be done about ink grenades being able to down u though walls- that is complete bullshit! i felt gears 2 overall had smoother movement but lacked with its weapons. loved the tactical approach as its a team game! not for idiots to run around thinkin theyre the dogs bollocks! ruining it for the rest of their team! im really tryin to stay positive for gears 3 but if they dont nail this im afraid i will be givin up on epic! in a nutshell they need to create a game that exploits both gears 1 n 2’s best features and we will have a truely amazing game!

i agree dude. Some things in gears 2 i like but the getting killed easy sucks. You have to stick with your team. I still like the lone ranger better. But you are right you have to make it a mixture.

GOW1 took more skills than any other game, if you were good enough you could kill the whole team by yourself, the shotgun was only overpowered if you didnt know how to wallbounce and then you deserved to get 2 shot or 1 shot downed, gow2 and gow3 are adding more and more easier ways to kill people taking out the skill it took in gow1 and host was just a bullshit excuse it should never be taken out everyone loved lobbies so they could play what they wanted

soo true man! Gears of war 1 is the only game I play. It’s the only game that doesn’t bore me after 1 hour. If I have a day with nothing to do, I am never upset to pick up the controller to play gears!! The skills that one needs to blindfire is sooo much tighter than any other game. Gears two fucked that all up. Epic game needs to get this into their heads…. its not about making the game easier but instead having skill! it took me 3 years to finally get good at gears 1, and all of that was soo enjoyable for me! Gears two is a noobie land.. and you can be shit on gears one.. but be a fucking prodigy on gears two… this makes no fucking sense! people who are shit on gears one.. can still be great on call of duty. This is because gears takes so much skill… samething with halo too… if your bad at gears… you can be good at halo still… but if your bad at call of duty or halo… good luck being good at gears!!!! Gears is a full on combat game…. and so what if the primary weapon is shotguns… who gives a shit… it is the most fun weapon to use… and it takes the most skill… when adding wall bouncing and shit. On gears 1, you feel as if you can take on the whole team… you always feel that the competition is in your hands.. and on gears 2… this feeling is utterly lost!

Well i am a big gears fan. I played gears 1 like the only game i played for the longest time. Gears 2 came out and you guys knew it wasn’t ready. I don’t know if you where trying to meet your deadline to compete with resistance 2 but we could tell it wasn’t ready for launch i played it for like an hour and then went back to gears of war 1. I still have it today and play it every once in a while. After like 7 updates its ok but i think a lot of people miss that action where you can take a whole team on by yourself. I miss the hero type to. I hate it when you get hit like one time and its basically over. I think its going to be hard for you to make it where people who play gears 1 to like gears 3. I think the play style is still going to be like gears 2. It looks that way even in the trailers, You guys know how much this beta is going to actually hurt this game. You are going to lose a lot of sales if this game isn’t up to par. I think you where trying to make it like moderwarefare. I do like that shotgun that can shoot like two people at once or even three now thats a weapon to have so it just depends on how it turns out. Don’t mess this up epic your name is really riding on this one.
