And it begins, the official marketing campaign for Gears of War 3 is revving up and our first big video to arrive (since we first saw some gameplay) is a tutorial video around the newly updated Gears of War Horde mode horribly dubbed Horde 2.0

It’s like Epic hasn’t noticed the 2.0 phenomena ended last year and now it’s just dated… anyway back to the game.

Horde mode is back and possibly is going to be better than ever. The major improvements over the previous Horde mode are as follows

  • Boss battles
  • Fortifications
  • Turrets
  • Silverbacks
  • Upgrades
  • Currency
  • Stages

In the old Horde mode every 10 levels we had to fight off a huge wave of locusts which became increasingly harder as we moved on, this has now been improved with an epic boss battle every 10 levels. So instead of having to take out a few boomers and a grunt or two we now need to take on a Brumak… awesome.

But the much bigger improvement comes in the way of fortifications, turrets and upgrades. The level starts and you’re going to need to find a corner of the much larger maps to hunker down in to finish this battle, when you find a suitable place you can start laying down fortifications such as wired fences, laser barriers, turrets that will automatically fire and a bunch of other options.

As the waves come and go you will be able to upgrade these fortifications to help you hold off that Brumak when it makes it’s appearance. The fortifications are upgraded with virtual currency which you will collect by taking out Locusts in brutal and yet entertaining fashions.

You can also use this currency to buy your way back into the game if you get taken out and unfortunately to also receive more ammo which is something I’m not happy about. Gears of War has never been about conserving ammo so I hope that’s not a new direction they are going in.

The other 2 newly added things are the huge mechanical Silverbacks which is pretty much a mobile fortress of doom.. I’m not sure I like the idea of the Silverbacks, Gears is slow enough already and to slow it down even more may just become annoying… either way what I do like is the look of the new stages that you are going to be playing Horde mode in.

Take a look at this video to see them in action and to hear from Anya what the changes in Horde 2.0 are.
