XCOM

I love XCOM: Enemy Unknown, from 2K and Firaxis. Without hyperbole, it’s one of my very favourite games released in the last few years, as it expertly and lovingly brought back a series I’d long feared dead. It managed to revive the brand with just enough nostalgia to tug at the heart, but backed it up with incredibly engrossing turn-based gameplay.

There’s a sequel to the game coming along next month, but if you’ve not played the first game and its expansion, you may not be up to speed. You’d also have missed out on excellence twice. You can make up for that with the latest humble bundle, which encompasses Firaxis’ best.

As per usual, it’s a tiered effort, with the first one – costing a single dollar – unlocking some great games, including the aforementioned XCOM. Yes, XCOM for a dollar. That tier gives you a few more gems, including Pirates! And Civilisation III.

Beat the average ($9.46 at time of writing), and you’ll be in strategy heaven for months, as you get even more Civilisation, and a ton more XCOM, including Enemy Within. Pay $15, and you’ll also get the latest Civ game, Beyond Earth, along with its exoplanets DLC and a coupon to redeem its Rising Tide expansion for a third off the sticker price.

To sum:

TIER 1: 1$

  • XCOM Enemy Unknown
  • Pirates!
  • Ace Patrol Bundle
  • Civ III Complete

TIER 2: Beat the Average ($9.46!)

  • Civ IV Complete
  • Civ V
  • Starships
  • XCOM EU Elite
  • XCOM EU Slingshot
  • XCOM Enemy Within
  • 10% off humble monthly coupon

TIER 3: 15$

  • Civ: Beyond Earth
  • Civ: Beyond Earth Exoplanets
  • 33% off Civ: Beyond Earth Rising Tide DLC coupon

If you don’t already own these games, there’s no excuse now. Buy games, support charity – be a hero.

As a reminder, there’s also a weekly bundle featuring a bunch of cool FMV games, and the multiple award winning Her Story is available if you shell out at least $5.

WHY HAVE YOU NOT CLICKED BUY YET????

A very awesome person gifted me XCOM a while ago, and let me tell you, that game is beyond excellent. When the Enemy Within DLC came out, I immediately purchased it.

    XCOM FTW!!!

Believe me, at the higher difficulty levels, XCOM is VERY nuanced to say the least

Did Otto tell you about our HORRIBLE sortie last night?

Masehare, I had a headache after that. Sortie 1 and 2 was cake, S3 was snipers only

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            January 20, 2016 at 08:19

Yeah I saw that S3. I was like… Ja, no. I’m not even going to try. I did a sniper only excavation once, it was terrible. The only good thing was that was before they fixed the excavation bug & we could extract after 100 cryotic lol.

I think Nyx is pretty underrated when it comes to sorties, especially the longer missions. Slap a long duration mind control on a heavy unit and you’ve got a friend for life.

They’re probably the least useful primaries in the game. I still want Vectis P though, thing is a nightmare to farm.

Who, exactly, are we doing this to me? Me, for daring to suggest a centuries old strategy game may be a bit more complex and nuanced than a beloved, albeit comparatively an infant, strategy title, or the aliens in said beloved strategy title?

Grocery prices are getting scary. I’m really glad I’ve never been one to drink much at home, I buy maybe one bottle of brandy or whiskey every few months.

I find it really funny because booze prices is one of those places where I’ve turned into a really old person. My first job was working for a liquor retailer, and remember when stuff like Russian Bear vodka and Wellington Brandy came out – it was the cheapest stuff on the market at R10 a bottle.

          • miaau

            January 20, 2016 at 09:11

Russian Bear was cheap because it was, well cheap. And it smelt funny.

Smirmoff all the way. Happened to see, while looking for my yearly scotch, that Russian bear is now more expensive.

            January 20, 2016 at 11:55

Funnily enough Russian Bear came first on a listing of chemically analysis of the Vodkas available on the South African market at the time.

Personally go for the real Russain stuff, only R20/R30 extra when on special

the humble bundles look less attractive than they did a year ago………

$15 (R253.xx) is now a fair bit to pay out, on games I already have. I have before bought humble bundles, just for one game, and figured the rest goes to charity (sliders help with that). Now?

That said, if you like Civ or Xcom and were curious, no reason NOT to get this now. Beat the average, through. Also, there is a theory that says even numbered Civ games are better and a lot about Civ IV is better than V (yes I end up playing Civ V still)

Otherwise I would have had spare keys to share.
