Go and play this game, immediately

This isn’t technically news, but more like a Public Service Announcement. There’s an indie game called …But That Was [Yesterday]. It’s excellent and totally worth five minutes of your time. I’m normally pretty sceptical when I’m sent links to check things out, especially when they’re links to flash-based browser games that are supposed to justify the whole “games as art” debate.

Needless to say I ventured over to the game and spent the few minutes it required to play from beginning to end. I had just arrived at work and as usual the office was a bit chaotic; phone calls, people talking, work piling up. But you know what? For the few minutes I spent with this game, all of the distractions felt miles away. The game had me intrigued and captivated from the word go.

It immediately reminded me of LIMBO for some reason. Perhaps it’s because …But That Was [Yesterday] is kind of minimalist but imbued with tons of emotion. The game is described as “A personal journey about learning to move forward in life” and was made by a bloke called Michael Molinari. There isn’t much gameplay to talk of so some people will cry foul and label it an “interactive story” or something, but basic platforming mechanics are present so there’s a game there for sure.

You can check out Michael Molinari’s website here.

Go and give it a try but you do need to have sound to get the whole experience. Let us know what you think in the comments below. I really enjoyed it and might have had a lump in my throat by the end. But that’s totally because I’m really manly and not a softy at all. Yeah, it’s totally that.
