You have a  team of legendary Pokémon, all maxed out and with ludicrous EV stats? Ha! I scoff at your team! I scoff to the max! For you see, I have a team of common Pokémon in my team…who all happen to be shiny. As far as bragging rights go, shiny Pokémon earn players the most, as the buggers are ridiculously hard to encounter. Hell, in the last three years, I’ve only managed to catch one of them. With the upcoming Pokémon remakes however, expect to get a shiny badass at launch.

Much like last year’s offer of a free Torchic that was available for a short while after the launch of Pokémon X and Y, Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby will have a shiny Beldum waiting for players who adopt the game early. This little fella also happens to come with a mega stone, so once you’ve evolved it into a Metang and then finally a Metagross, you can slap the theories of evolution in the face and power him up in battle.

Usually, in the original Ruby and Sapphire games, players had to trek through the entire game, encountering the Pokémon champ Steven and defeating him in order to complete the game. After the end credits rolled, you could travel to his house in Mossdeep town, and find a Beldum waiting for you there on his table. Naturally, this download method cuts some of that effort out. Awesome.

And while we’re here, feast your eyes on some official artwork for the new mega-evolutions of Mega Altaria, Mega Salamence and Mega Lopunny. Click to embiggen:

  1. Talking about Shiny pokemon I’ve just realised something. Some people can go a lifetime without ever catching a shiny pokemon out in the wild. Yet never complain or throw their toys out the cot.

Most other genre’s people would freak out if it’s that hard or so close to impossible to achieve something. Just look at Diablo 3. You are guaranteed at least 1 legendary every 2 hours yet people complain that the legendary drop rate isn’t high enough.

Pokemon’s shiny encounter rate is almost impossible and instead of people complaining they appreciate when someone has one.

The Chances of a shiny is 1/8192….. Or 1/1 if you catch the Red Gyarados in Fire Red / Leaf Green 😛
