[Update: This was an April Fools article]

Polyphony Digital have confirmed via their website that Gran Turismo 5, their premier sim racing title will once again be delayed. The game, originally set to be released in Japan yesterday with a western release to follow in a few months has been beset by developmental problems, and will now be delayed further.

The reasons for the delay are twofold.

Studio lead Kazunori Yamauchi, ever the perfectionist, is currently not completely happy with the damage modelling in current builds of the game and plans to implement a secondary in-game engine solely for the purposes of making dents, scuffs and broken glass all the more realistic. Having pored over videos showcasing the damage modelling, this latest delay is probably warranted – Forza 3’s damage is more refined at the moment.

Fans of the series of reason to be excited about the delay though – Yamauchi has also promised the racer will be getting even more modes, adding to the already rich line-up the game promises. Having had hands-on time with Activision and Bizarre creation’s Blur, Yamuachi has heralded it “the future of racing games,” and – in a effort to make the game appeal to casual gamers as well as hardcore sim fans -  will now include power-ups and a battle racing mode, giving player simulated carnage in addition to simulated racing.

The game, which has already cost in excess of 80 Million USD will now be released worldwide on December 12, 2012.
