Gran Turismo 5: Non-Premium Cars Look Awful – Prevent You From Taking Close-Up Photos

Gran Turismo 5 is here. After years and years of patience, delays, news, rumours and flame wars, the next version of Polyphony Digital’s Real Driving Simulator is finally in our hands.

I am a longtime fan of the Gran Turismo series as well as a complete petrol-head, which usually means that if a game lets me simultaneously propel and control something with four wheels and an engine, I’m usually very, very interested.

Now, I would be lying through my teeth if I told you that I was only hyped out of my brain for Gran Turismo’s fantastic driving physics. The truth is that with a game like Gran Turismo, you can’t help but kinda want the game based on the incredible visuals alone.

Just a short while in to the game’s career mode, you could imagine my absolute dismay when I realised that the less impressive “Standard” cars looked a whole lot less standard and a whole lot more damn-near-atrocious than I had originally imagined.

Even more interesting, is that Polyphony have gone out of their way to try and prevent it from getting out.

[NOTE: ALL PICS CAN BE ENLARGED TO FULL SIZE BY SIMPLY CLICKING ON THEM]

At the beginning of my career, I was told that I need to use my starting cash to buy a second hand used car in order to get things going. Utilising my long history with Gran Turismo and deep knowledge of automobiles, I went for the first one that I could afford that didn’t look like complete crap, so I bought a Nissan Silvia.

I already knew that I wasn’t going to have a cockpit view for the car, but what I didn’t know was that everything I was able to see would look like complete and utter trash from a generation long gone.

What many people didn’t seem to realise is that when Polyphony said that they would be bringing over cars from the PS2’s Gran Turismo 4, they literally meant that they were just going to copy them over with absolutely no changes to the car models or textures whatsoever.

The result of doing so means that in your brand new next-gen ultimate racing simulator sequel on your super powerful Playstation 3 of cell-powered awesome-sauce, you are driving around in car that looks like this:

GTSilvia.jpg

Gran Turismo 5 has an absolutely wonderful photo mode, it’s so damn wonderful that it lets me take photos that look like this:

GTMonza.jpg

Photos like that are the sort of thing you thought about when the name Gran Turismo 5 came up in conversation. Thing is, it seems like Gran Turismo 5 is very, very happy to let your show off just how good the game can look, however, it seems to try and do as much as possible to ensure that you don’t show off how bad it can look.

I realised this when I attempted to take a close-up shot of a standard car, only to have the game tell me to “Please move a little further away”. At first I thought that it was related to something else, until I realised that at close range, the sign only popped up when I was looking at standard cars. Shift the camera over to a premium car right next to it and you can zoom in all you want.

Gran Turismo may try its hardest to prevent me from taking a proper close up shot, but it is still not immune to the magical powers of a crappy, but handy cellphone camera. Here’s what I mean:

GTpics1.jpg

Now look what you have gone and done Polyphony, not only can everyone see very low poly model and the terrible textures, but they are seeing it with horrible TV lines from the aforementioned crappy cellphone camera. You folks should have just let me take the photo using the photo mode.

Here’s a couple more examples of some of the standard cars in this race:

GTpic3.jpg

GT2.jpg

And as you can see, this photo of the premium Mazda in front has no issues with us ogling its details:

GTpic4.jpg

As you can see in photos like that gorgeous one of the Audi above, the game can look really fantastic, especially when all of the cars on the track are premium ones. However, when the track is full of standard cars, the view is nowhere near as pretty, and you might even wonder how you are still playing the same game.

What I found to be the worst of the lot, was situations like the race where I took some of the photos above, in that the grid was a complete mix of standard and premium vehicles that just don’t look right together.

We still have a lot of time to spend with Gran Turismo 5, so as much as it failed to make a good first impression, we will still be spending a lot of time with the entire game to determine what the final verdict will be, so stay tuned for our review in the near future.

Oh by the way (just because it was also in the picture folder), here… have another pretty photo.

I totally agree and this is what I have said in the past. Rather take 1/4 of the total of cars and make them stunning.

And before the guys say you don’t look at the body work while driving in the cockpit mode… not everyone drive in cockpit mode.

How is the physics of those cars? Do they atleast perform true to weight an momentum.

It’s a real shame it was released like this coz from what I’ve seen of the GOOD side of GT5 it is truly unparalleled in it’s attention to detail. Some of the screenshots are jaw dropping stuff.

Been playing it since last night, and this pomps Forza for breakfast. Forza’s implentation of handling, to me anyway, is a cookie cutter approach and there is not much difference from car to car. In the 4 or 5 hours I’ve jolled GT, each car handles noticably differently and you can feel it. There is no short cuts when it comes to the cars handling like it was with Forza.

Aye, these photos play it straight – it personally doesn’t bother me, but GT5 visually is a tale of two sets of assets – the new tracks and cars built for the PS3 look awesome – best I’ve ever seen. And the old stuff brought over looks like (because I daresay it is) PS2 assets up-scaled (although the actual track of the old tracks is great, but try not to look at the scenery or the crowd ;)).

That said, both Standard and Premium cars drive really, really nicely, and that’s why I play GT – it won’t stop me enjoying both sets of cars, and some of the standards still look quite nice (I can’t remember which, but I had a look at a couple of high-end standards and they weren’t too shabby), but most of them that I’ve seen so far are visually fairly poor.

I feel sorry for those who are disappointed but to me GT5 has been brilliant. I drive GT5 and all car games stricly with a steering wheel/pedal (G27) and the handling is perfect. Every car has it’s own unique character and feel.

It looks like most people are nit picking and forgetting GT5 is a new platform from which better stuff will come. I’d rather have PD build from a strong base with minor detail missing and add it as time goes by than having something that looks good every where but has no potential to build apon.

For those who haven’t seen the article on gtplanet, here are one of the points mentioned.

“Yamauchi announced that the launch of Gran Turismo 5 marks the beginning of a “new era” for the GT series. GT5 will be regularly updated and expanded in the coming weeks and months, and there are apparently many exciting things in store for us.”

you are obviously one of those PS3/GT5 fanboys. They are just stating afact about the game. I can’t see why not one site can say one bad thing about a PS3 game without getting burned for it. Just like the what happened with the FFXIII giveaway in the USA with an xbox 360, and all the fans “booed” ??? PS3 gamers are sore losers and gamers period. Buy yourself a 360 and enjoy both worlds, just like me

This is so hilarious! You guys are getting so upset over someone disagreeing with your views. I can only go on the overall opinions of critics and gamers. The bottom line is that the game looks great and plays even better. Yes the standard cars are below par on what our expectations were and after 6 years this is unacceptable.I dont think Nick is slamming the game, he is pointing out his dissapointment at the lack of polish. And really they should have addressed this. Still a great game though.

Nick do you have a standard TV or an HDTV? I started playing GT5 last night and I haven’t come across this issue, although I do most of my gaming on an HDTV. I’ll swop over to our old TV tonight (or tomorrow) and see if I can spot the “awful cars”.

    PRAISE:
(PS: I reached level 10 late last night… rain.. oh my fucking god.. it’s beautiful.) The amount of detail that’s gone into this game is freaking amazing (mind blowing). There are actually no way to adequately convey this message, because you have to see for yourself. This is what a racing/driving simulation should be. In a nutshell, the absolute pinnacle of driving perfection.

By the way, they could easily have just made a stand alone race kart game, because those little race karts are awesome. :w00t:

    CONS:
    X) My only niggle is the loading times, even after you’ve installed it takes forever to load up a game. Hopefully they can sort this out with a patch.

    X) The navigation menu isn’t ideal, although I hated the menu in GT4 as well, but eventually warmed up to it.

I should probably add that I haven’t used the online multiplayer yet, but then I generally wait for a patch before I go online (no matter which game it is).

Online is always a mess on or soon after launch, regardless of the title (Bobby looks at COD Bops… fuck… still? STILL?? DAMN YOU TREYARCH).

ok chicken heads here are the pros and cons over forza 3. i love car games so i have both.

pro: the best driving sim so far. better then forza any day. premium cars are drop dead gorgeous. kart racing. dirt racing, snow driving, weather(the rain and snow is so beautiful and better yet in 3d)its in fucking 3d. i have a Toshiba 3d as well like specter.

cons: damage how how i miss damage. if they had 25% of the damage thats in dirt 2 this game would rule. screen tear, some shadow popping texture popping, some non premium cars are below standard.(most look ok) some cars dont have any customization options( rims, hood, bumpers ect)
**so gt5 seems not to be complete for a game 5 years in the making but the sheer size in cars tracks and layout diversity is enough to get the forza 3 fans addicted to gt5.**

Hey people i come in Peace just noticed something today!

GT5 Damage Physics improve dramatically once you reach level 40 (give or take 18 hours play), AI becomes more aware of your presence and avoids you to an aggressive extent much more than in arcade mode and intermediate.

    have a look! 😀

don’t really know apparently their releasing a patch to unlock damage for everyone i kid you not! it might come with today’s patch but im not sure have not checked online is pretty fast today, i like the false start regulations!

Im very poor now because in extreme series when you bash your car you gotta fix it! very expensive to maintain im so broke! 0 money! i’m going back to professional and special events to build up income again, im actually buying cheaper cars because the expensive cars are very costly to repair!

just to give you an idea on how much damage costs to fix, when i bashed my veyron it cost 200 000 CR to fix rigidity :O
i lol’ed so hard! so im kinda finding cheap fast workhorse cars and i play my premiums in arcade unless i feel in the mode and not give a toss, and you dont have to fix it, it will just drive skew, look horrible and the paint will dull 😛

Did some googling and have found out that the signature edition and the chrome cars and stealth cars cost only 500 bucks to fix rigidity!

So you can use those cars in tough times! very cheap to maintain and you can crash as much as you want!

im impressed that you managed to finish GT5, or at least complete it 50%(for a reputable reviewer) in only three days!

You must of not slept for 40 hours solid given the amount of hours it takes to get a proper look at this game lets see at least 20 online races, raced a substantial portion of arcade racer, or even worse GT Mode with its special events and photo modes!

You must be the new Shumacher, as it took me over 6 hours just to do the licenses you must have completed the game with the proficiency of the Stig!

Well Forza 3 my have won review wise, sales wise though GT5 sales are thru the roof estimates stand at 2.2 to 2.5 Million the first week. Pretty impressive opening numbers for a PS3 first party game. My only question is will it surpass the evasive 5 Million units, a figure dt a handful of PS3 games have achieved.

The longer you play GT5, and the higher your level becomes, the more obvious it is that review sites like IGN have been utterly exposed for their lack of actual reviewing ability.

It actually makes sense that you’d only have access to the full-body and realistic simulated damage once you reach level 40 (with damage simulation increasing as you level through the game. It seems at level 20 damage really starts to become an issue)… After all, do you really want to be stuck in “fix your only premium car”, and yet have no money left to add new cars to your garage cycle?

It also makes sense that since the reviewer at IGN only played until he reached level 5, he would have no access to all the features that are level-locked.

Because when you first start the game, you’re still in the “ram them off the road as you enter a corner” mindset. I still do it to win matches myself, but then we’ve been doing it since GT1 days. (You know you do too :P)

It makes sense to increase difficulty with damage, if it was active at level 1, it would have made acquiring new cars a lot more difficult, also you’d get stuck in the “I have to fix the car again” cycle…

What.. 20 000 credits again? But I just made 20 000 off this race … booo! :getlost:

The reviewer is right, in my opinion. The game designers seemed to lack dedication and commitment. It’s just bad that GT5 was bragging that there would be 1000+ cars, but the only downside is that only 200 are premium.
