We have a legion of Gran Turismo fans frequenting this website, so in case any of you were feeling a little crestfallen from last week’s update on Forza 4, we bring you some more news that will give you a bounty of bragging rights. You’re welcome!
The bragging rights come in the form of official sales figures fresh from Polyphony’s house of all things Gran Turismo. Since the series launched in 1997, it has sold more than 63.15 million copies around the world. That figure, of course, is made up of the nine varying GT titles that have been released to date, including GT 5 Prologue and Gran Turismo PSP. That doesn’t include the more niche titles like Gran Turismo Concept 2001 TOKYO. Want to know how much GT5 contributed to this whopping sales figure?
So far, last year’s Gran Turismo 5 has sold 6.37 million copies worldwide. That figure, however, is a little stale as it represents the amount sold up to December 2010. Considering the game launched on 24 November 2010, this means that the game sold, on average, more than 170Â 000 copies a day.
The Gran Turismo title that has sold the most is Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, which has shifted 14.89 million in lifelong sales. Gran Turismo 4 isn’t too far behind that with an amount of 11.19 million; both titles were PlayStation 2 exclusives. GT5 still has a way to go before it can take up a position alongside those two top-selling GT games. It will be interesting to see if it does in the long run, considering the install base of the PS3 console is a lot less than that of the PS2.
UPDATE 1: the Polyphony figures do not specify whether the amount is shipped or sold. Some websites are claiming it’s shipped and others are saying sold. However, we’re doing some more digging and will update this post again if we find clarification. [thanks Aussious]
