GT5 Car Damage

Kotaku is at GamesCom this year and has managed to get their grubby paws on a brief demonstration of GT5’s much anticipated car damage.

Not to put a damper on the whole thing but it sounds pretty terrible to be honest.

Kotaku’s write up is pretty repetitive about the fact that the game is still in development and that Polyphony Digital were only offering a severely limited demo of the functionality but that doesn’t excuse a bad implementation.

The car damage appears to be completely superficial with the bumpers coming loose (but not scratching), the doors not closing properly (but not denting) and the bonnet becoming the teeniest bit damaged.

However the lights and wing mirrors, easily the most fragile pieces of a car, were completely unscathed.

Added to that we apparently now have super reflective mudflaps and licence plates which just makes us feel that Polyphony haven’t even finished the basic polishing yet so I don’t expect much of an improvement in the physics engine responsible for the damage.

It’s early days yet but take this as a warning and don’t hold your breath for decent car damage in GT5.

umm i don’t think its actually that bad! its not brilliant, but the affected bumper moves like it should.
and forza’s damage looked pretty generic from what i’ve seen.

don’t think either outfit has managed to pull it off properly.

Gran Turismo 5’s damage modelling is unfinished:

Quote: Yamauchi-san explains in an interview with GamesBlog that the GT5 code brought to GamesCom “marks only the first step of what we want to achieve for damage.”

So they have 3 months to rewrite the engine to add decent damage model?

It will ship broken, or delayed.

oh come on! i used it as a reference, and merely stating neither of the two most anticipated racing sims were shining in the much touted damage feature.

at any rate, apologies for causing you undue distress!

    sigh.

GT5 might not have realistic damage models but at least it supports the G25/G27
