Regular readers would know that I am not the most proficient videogame driver. When seated behind a virtual steering wheel, faulty wiring in my brain ordains that I must accelerate – and only accelerate – until Newton’s laws dictate my crumpled inertia.
It stands to reason that when it comes to racers, the one aspect that familiarises itself to me is damage modelling. It is, after all, the only feature I really get to enjoy.
Gameswire have compiled a set of comparison screenshots from the imminently available Forza 3, and the not-likely-to-be-released-any-time-soon GT5.
Let’s see how they fare, shall we?
As is evidenced above, it seems that Forza’s damage is just that little bit more realistic. While GT allows for more extreme things like flying doors it presents itself as a dichotomy; I’d expect a car that’s damaged enough to have it’s goddamned door fall off to have its paintwork at least a little scuffed.
I’m pretty glad that Polyphony Digital have elected to let GT5 cook a little longer -coupled with Kazunori Yamauchi quest for perfection I’m sure they delay will ensure that GT5’s damage model will be up to scratch by the time the game finally releases – sometime in 2029.

yeah i agree even NFS seems to be more fun thou system link is sorely missed on that title otherwise i would’ve chosen NFS over Forza3 as the demo sucks ass at the moment!!! not worth the money and the hype at the moment

I was under the impression that PD were not planning on full scale car damage for all cars, but only for the WRC and Nascar licence. Some manufacturers still don’t want their cars to be completely damaged.

Why in the hell is the little toy games actual driving screen off to the right, with the big HUD in front of the wheel lol.
And thats the thing, as Super_Bonk said, with all of these games, it isnt that they cant do better damage, they arent given the permission by companies like merc, audi, bmw whoever to do structural damage that causes the cars chassis to change shape. They dont want people seeing their car crumple into a a metre box of scrap because it will make them associate the car with death.
Could you imagine each car having to have accurate safety depending on their ncap ratings… it would actually be a nightmare for developers.

Who still drives a car once the doors have fallen off? :wassat:
It must be an on-track weight reduction/aerodynamic upgrade
