GTA V about to break the 30 million mark

Grand Theft Auto has always been a huge seller, but I think even Rockstar have been taken aback at how incredibly well the latest installment has sold. And that’s even before the much anticipated, maybe real PC version has been released.

Let’s take a little trip back in time and take a look at the sales figures for Grand Theft Auto IV.

GTA IV was released on the 29th of April 2008 and immediately took the new world record for day one sales by selling 3.6 million units on the first day. Two years later the title had sold 15 million units increasing to 22 million by September 2011. So Rockstar had a target of 22 million in total sales to beat over 3 years which is quite a daunting task for most companies, but then again Rockstar aren’t most companies.

Fast forward to September 2013 and GTA V hits retail shelves and smashes the previous world record by selling 11.2 million copies on the first day nearly hitting the 2 year mark of its predecessor already. Fast forward another 4 months and VGChartz is now reporting combined GTA V sales of 29 832 889 for the end of December, add the first few days of 2014 and we can pretty much confirm that GTA V has now broken the 30 million mark and the game is still yet to land on the PC.

It’s no accident that the game has sold so well, we voted it the best game of 2013 and second best game of the last generation. With tons of DLC, and possible next-gen versions and a PC version to come I wouldn’t be surprised to see GTA V break the 50 million mark in this generation which is nothing less than the game itself deserves.

I’m glad its not on PC yet, gives me time to “attempt” to attack my backlog

I’ve effectively given up on attacking my backlog. Whenever I attack, Steam just retaliates and I end up with 2 extra games.

If they implement cross-platform play when they release it on PC I’d be very tempted to get it on launch, otherwise I’d be perfectly content to wait.

            F2P or subscrption based ?

jeez 100 vs 100 …. um what line are you running ? 2mb is what i have and i that sufficent ?

          • Admiral Chief in Vegas

            January 8, 2014 at 13:52

Its F2P, but you can subscribe and purchase items that you normally earn by playing (I refer to this as richboy cheating) but one thing that’s nice from the sub is that you level up considerably faster.

I have 8ta 3G, and I only start to lag at the 100v100 (server is in Europe).

I think your 2mb line should be fine, just don’t join the massive fights (you will see on the map the ally/enemy activity)

They are broken down into 1-12, 12-24, 24-48 and 48+ (allies/enemies shown differently, for example 12-24 allies, 24-48 enemies)

You then choose the type of engagement you prefer, outdoor/urban, Air to Air, Air to Ground, tanks, APCs, quads, etc.

            Really fun.

You should join the Lazygamer Steam group, there is also a SA PS2 group (not very active)

Awsome thanks for the advice , i also use 8ta mobile currently for ps3 and bf3 and 4 (doesnt seem to work on the 2mbs telkom line) , i mean R150 for 3 gigs is so good ,hope they drop the price this year again

do u know of cheap LTE phone that can be used as a hotspot or a modem that uses LTE but can take a simcard , the way things look i for see my future spent with telkom mobile and not telkom broadband??!

          • Admiral Chief in Vegas

            January 9, 2014 at 07:25

Telkom has a lekker deal with a LTE Wifi router and 10GB for something like R500 and 20gb for R700

          • MakeItLegal

            January 9, 2014 at 11:59

Thats well within reason , and considering the 3g is faster than my 2mbs line i am sure LTE will do just fine….

            Thanks a Mill

Steam is an app, SteamOS is an OS.

Looking at your specs, I think you are fine for quite some time (maybe double the RAM)

Grab a cup of coffee. Steam is just a program that runs on Windows/Linux/Mac. With this program you are able to play all your Steam games (which will be most games on pc). SteamOS is an OS that is based on Linux. It is therefor free. But beware, because not all games can run on Linux, most games run on windows, so best stick to that. Any PC can be a Steam machine, just install the OS and voila.

As for the gpu, you’re good to go. I compared it to my GTX560Ti and it completely blows it out the water. I think this will be good for at least 2 years. Depending on how much graphix means to you.

I’m pretty sure the reason its not on PC (yet) is because it will release as a GOTY or some form of ‘special’ edition with all the DLC, Patches Fixes etc. on PC AND next-gen consoles, seeing as though the architecture for PC, PS4 and X1 is supposedly nearly identical. I’ve been saying all along the GTA V we have now is only the ‘beta’ for what will be the definitive versions on next-gen/PC

Let this be a shining example to all publishers pushing for annual and bi-annual sequels. Do the job properly and get a proper product out, and people will buy.

Excluding Polyphony who somehow missed the ball.

Hopefully it releases on “current” gen as well, I’m sure it’ll do just as well as it did on the 360 and PS3… then PC sales will be nuts as expected.

The game really deserves this, and if it weren’t for the hackers, crackers, and general a’holes getting banned or getting others banned, it would be an ever more awesome experience.

Can’t wait for those damn heists though!!!!

As Trev said, it would be awesome to have cross platform play! Make it happen Rockstar! PLEASE! lol
