GTA-V-Comparison

By now, most of you are re-cruising through San Andreas, taking advantage of a bump in textures while Trevor takes advantage of a bump of coke inside GTA V. There’s no denying that GTA V looks simply marvellous with some proper horses under the console hood. But more importantly, which console does it look better on? Who gets to take home the bragging rights?

Digital Foundry has a nice wrap-up on the two console versions so far as well which as usual is well worth a read if you’re into the the more technological side of the game and how it has evolved:

At first blush, we’re looking at a very similar release to the Xbox One version – with only one really noticeable difference, the implementation of a lens flare effect that appears either absent or dialled back on Xbox One. Frame-rate is confirmed at 30fps, though the rare dropped frames seen on Xbox One are even less of an issue here.

We started our Xbox One playthrough directly after re-familiarising ourselves with the game via a couple of hours of PlayStation 3 gameplay, and the sense we get from the new title is that it’s a brighter, crisper reworking of the original that eliminates the vast majority of the original release’s technical shortcomings. The Xbox One version’s consistent update is a radical departure from the lacklustre performance of its last-gen siblings – gameplay is mostly locked at 30fps with just minor fluctuations beneath its target. Curiously, despite a consistent update, judder can manifest a little during gameplay – a curious effect.

If you don’t have time for all that performance analysis talk, then here’s a quicker comparison video from Gaming Bolt:

If there is a difference between the two console versions, it’s tighter than a plastic nun’s backside. Besides some incremental lighting effects painting a slightly different picture, I genuinely can’t see much of a difference. Of course, this will all be moot once the PC version arrives next year and the modders get their hands on it. That’s going to look like something else entirely.

As long as they keep that original gameplay intact, I’m on board. Early word on the DOOM reboot has been very positive so lets hold thumbs and play GZDOOM in the interim.

Again….. Gamespot does the same, they don’t change the gamma and contrast settings thats why xbone looks wow and ps4 looks washed out.

Lol that header is full of it =p All the ps4 & xb1 fanboys their games running at 30fps on 1080p, Wii U manages 60fps at 1080p and looks absolutely gorgeous doing it.

    Still pretty funny though =p

The header doesn’t even make sense… the Wii U is more powerful than the 360 and PS3 and both were able to run the game fine, there’s a difference between being funny and being wrong.

The consoles limited to 30fps while pc will be more than that. I still like consoles but i mean for this game pc version might be better due to higher fps.

Maybe the whole 30fps vs 60fps thing will just become a selling point? Maybe the industry just collectively turns it in to another marketing ploy (ie the whole “1080 is true HD” gimmick).

For competitive games that need speed and reflex, 60fps is the way to go, whereas an RPG like DA:I would be perfectly fine at 30fps. IMO form should follow function, at least as far as framerate is concerned.
What if those greedy gremlins monetize the whole debacle, like they make a game locked at 30fps and you have to pay for 60fps o_O

There is quite a difference in the colour quality, as if the PS4’s colours are more “natural”

Even more on this, there appears to be some pretty noticeable foliage density differences:

Really trivial comparisons at this point; we’ve already established that the PS4 is a more powerful gaming system. So with that in mind, the Xbox One is actually holding up staggeringly well. Seriously, most of those scenes are almost identical. 🙂

Kind of a strange stance to be taking on an article about the differences in the game depending on the hardware. And given the ‘parity’ driven willingly by multiplatform devs (not the parity clause, the parity to avoid ‘debate’ ala Ubisoft, etc…), It’s not surprising at all. GTA’s only the beginning. The exclusive titles are where the differences are really going to become apparent.

We know the power difference is there, and we know it’s quite substantial. It’s up to the devs to utilize it. We also know that the kind of trickery capable on the PS4, is only available on the R9 290+ series AMD cards, ergo, very, very few developers have even touched GPU Compute on a level that the PS4 offers (because it’s not fiscally smart to develop a game around a GPU that only a meager handful of people have). Now that the PS4 is selling the way it is, we’ll see many many more devs working on it. Much like how devs had to figure out how to offload work from the PS3’s GPU to the Cell’s SPE’s. Not something devs had done before and took time to work into their engines.

So, again, the XB1 not lagging substantially behind is to be expected for the first couple years. Once middleware/engines have GPGPU functionality embedded in them, the differences will only become more and more apparent.

And I’m not sure if you’ve actually watched the video, but the foliage density differences are pretty substantial. I’ll take more over less, any day of the week.

Um, no, not ‘basically’. It has 8 ACE’s which only the R9 290+ cards have. This allows for a tremendous level of GPGPU Compute, which simply isn’t capable in the vast majority of GPU’s currently out in the market. The rest of the card, doesn’t match up to the R9 290, and is closer to what you’re talking about, but the modifications Sony and AMD made, were specifically designed with GPU Compute in mind.

I’m glad I saw that video before opening up the Xbox One version. I went back to the store to get a refund for it. I mean sure it’s just grass but that could be the very beginning of it. I’ll probably use the money this weekend and pick up Sunset Overdrive.
