It’s hard to believe just how long it’s been since a core GTA title made itself known in the gaming world. While I hated the driving mechanics that had become a tad too realistic for my tastes, the rest of the game was pretty damn good overall. GTA IV was kept alive long after release with some DLC,which wasn’t exactly spectacular, but still interesting nonetheless. That trend is going to continue in the fifth game, according to publisher Take Two.

“I think you can safely assume that Rockstar, as the label that led the charge in downloadable content with Grand Theft Auto 4, I think you’d have every reason to believe, purely because of the ground-breaking nature of the title itself and the multiplayer in the title, that there’s going to be a lot of interesting stuff. But I’ll leave that to Rockstar to announce,” said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick to Videogamer.

As for the exact date of the game coming out, Zelnick remained tight-lipped on it, only mentioning the official spring 2013 release date;

With regard to the date for Grand Theft Auto 5, spring 2013, we make those announcements based on what we think is best to market the title, and we think that’s the right way to describe it, and we’re thrilled with the way that is shaping up.

The first DLC for GTA IV, The Lost and Damned, wasn’t exactly great. Dull, too sombre and set in an atmosphere that suffered under the harsh driving mechanics of the game, it wasn’t something to write home about.

The second major DLC release however, The Ballad of Gay Tony, was a definite step up, infusing the game with the signature silliness and crazy stunts from older games, that people had been looking for.

If there’s more DLC like that on the cards for GTA V, it might just be worth grabbing the inevitable season pass for it at the end of the day.
