Grand Theft Auto better on the 360

I was sent this a few days ago but with a title like that is there any other day I could publish this one on?

A site called the Tech Spy Blog has put together a list of 15 reasons why GTA IV will be better on the Xbox 360.

To be honest a lot of the complaints are about the poor SIXAXIS controller which I have to agree is far worse than the Xbox 360 controller. There are even rumblings of GTA IV using the dodgy motion sensor ability of the controller which has not been used very well in virtually ever other game.

Another major problem is that the PS3 version is still running slightly behind the 360 version which just means that the 360 version has had more polishing done to it.

Another key problem is that the media and the like have only been showing the 360 version of the game. This is a current industry problem in that the PS3 versions of all cross platform games are not getting as much attention as the 360 versions.

Also 360 achievements are a major draw for multiple console owners not to mention that exclusive DLC that is coming and the recent Xbox 360 price cut.

However the biggest problem in my mind is what the developers have had to say. Over the development period developers have the following problems on the PS3 and only the lack of HDD on the 360.

1. Slow read speeds from Blu-Ray
2. Another forced installation
3. PS3 Fill rate problems
4. less aliasing

My personal opinion is that not a single cross platform game has yet beaten the 360 and I don’t see this changing anytime soon. Granted GTA is a Sony standard but the 360 is easier to develop on and is apparently the lead platform in this developments as well.

Only time will tell though… I can pretty much assure you that if you only have a PS3 you won’t be disappointed.

Wasn’t Burnout Paradise marginally better on the PS3 ?

As for the PS3 being a little behind, it really is a pity that Sony can’t recall all the consoles and just put in more RAM. Half the problems would be solved.

LOL, that article is real fanboy drivel. Xbox 360 uses less electricity! It’s also funny that he thinks he knows more about the game than journalists who have actually seen the PS3 version in motion and say there’s nothing to differentiate them.

I read in one preview that the aliasing in the PS3 version is better. I’ll post it if I can remember where I saw it. I hope that the PS3 Blu-Ray will accomodate superior audio, too.

Ultimately, I reckon the two versions will be similar, but I’m probably getting the PS3 version for three reasons: 1. It’s a PlayStation franchise to me and playing it on the 360 would feel as wrong Jean Claude Van Damme in an art movie. 2. I’m fed up with the DREs and random freezing and crashing I’m getting on my 360 lately. 3. There a good chance we will not be able to download the 360 DLC here, anyway, unless we have offical Live support by the time it comes out.

I will be waiting on reviews, though, before I make my choice.

“1. It’s a PlayStation franchise to me and playing it on the 360 would feel as wrong Jean Claude Van Damme in an art movie”
I’ve seen a lot of PS3 fans saying this but to me it doesn’t make sense.

“I’m fed up with the DREs and random freezing and crashing I’m getting on my 360 lately”
Now that sounds like fanboy drivel

“There a good chance we will not be able to download the 360 DLC here, anyway, unless we have offical Live support by the time it comes out.”
Why do you say that? Almost all other downloadable content is available to us? I though PS3 owners don’t care about the DLC anyway?

They released a patch for the Xbox360 version to make it the same as the PS3 version that had more than a year extra to polish. So Oblivion isn’t better on the PS3.

Jim Bob is right about the DLC. Because we don’t have Live in SA, lots of the adult rated content gets blocked here because Live assumes we’ve banned it, like the Germans have. So it is possible that they’ll screw us again.

I just can’t wait for the game and don’t care on which console it is better. I only have an Xbox and just hope that I don’t experience the same frame rate issues that I am getting on RSV2.

I have already paid for the game and got it at a pre-order price of R535.00. Pre-order FTW.

The hell with you Slippy, you have no right to say that.

I am having a lot of problems with my 360 and they’re irritating me. That has nothing to do with being a fanboy – believe me, I’m as mad as hell about getting a DRE right when I’ve just about made it through a tough part of R6:V2 on realistic. And I’m getting them constantly with games like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.

And we don’t have access to a lot of mature content on Xbox Live.

I’m a PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 owner, so you don’t know anything about me and how I feel about DLC. Idiot.

Jimbob, if your 360’s giving issues stop complaining and swap it out! 😉

There’s something not mentioned in this article that was mentioned in the IGN 360 podcast that sounds like a bit of a big deal. Apparently the way the targeting works is like gears, but with the addition of a “lock on” if you completely depress the left trigger. Apparently on the PS3 version, with those rubbish triggers on both the SIXAXIS and DS3, it feels really clumsy and awkward. And that’s coming from Hilary Goldstein, the man known for bashing the 360!

As for the rest of if, development was lead on the 360, the absolute best Playstation can hope for is equality.

And Jimbob as far as the DLC goes, we’ll get it here don’t you worry. The only stuff we don’t get is the stuff banned in Germany for gratuitous violence like Gears. GTA has already been approved in Europe.

All things considered, if you have access to both versions the only reason to go for the PS3 version is rabid fanboyism.

‘Jimbob, if your 360’s giving issues stop complaining and swap it out!’

It’s out of warranty and the three year warranty only applies to RROD because Microsoft doesn’t acknowledge the DVD drive problem. I’ve already gone through the monkeys at Xbox support to no avail.

So if I buy the 360 version and there’s no DLC available in SA, will you refund my money? GTA is getting cuts in Australia, and I’m sure the game will be running into a storm of controversy, so it’s very far from certain that the DLC will available.

Also getting the PS3 version. So what if a particular scene/level has better lighting effects and this console has more/less aliasing etc. Honestly, it doesnt impact the gameplay or enjoyment of the game. If you feel the need to sit with a magnifying glass looking for a better texture on a certain brick or lamppost just to prove a point, or driving around to see where pop-ups occur instead of just enjoying what Rockstar has made, hooray for you. Buy the version you want – it’s as simple as that.
@doobi – i own both consoles and no, not a rabid fanboy. I dont subscribe to LIVE, paying to play online doenst sit too well with me, so getting PS3 version for the free multiplayer content.

Abe, the six axis is a piece of crap. It’s light, it definitly is not comfortable and the lack of rumble does bite. The 360 control is bigger granted (size matters here), ergonomic, has triggers for triggers and not buttons (WTF!) and it turns itself off after a few minutes of idle time. It is far better suited to 99% of games.

I dislike the 360 controller only because of it’s size. I much prefer the smaller lighter sixaxis. But that’s because it suits my hands. The triggers on the 360 controller are better but i would have liked them a bit wider. The sixaxis triggers are not bad at all though.

As for the differences in GTAIV, i’m willing to bet that they are going to be so minor that they’ll be irrelevant either way.

Here is a quote from Phil Harrison regarding the Sixaxis since we are on the subject:

“I think that the next generation interfaces that can be created built on Sixaxis motion sensitivity give tremendous gameplay benefits that far outweigh a reactive vibration function. The decision that we’ve made to build in the Sixaxis functionality, and Bluetooth wireless, and great battery life, and all the other functionality that comes with it, far outweighs the chatter that we’re getting on vibration. And, it’s incredibly light! Just pick it up!”

Yeah right! I think he forgot to mention the lawsuits.

I disagree Burns, the xbox controll is definatey not more ergonomical than the sixaxis, that this is so uncomfortable and bulky and in my opinion feels cheap. While I agree the triggers arent 100% on the sixaxis I still think its a step up on the PS2 controller. And as a side point to Lazy, the motion sensing as been used more than successsfuly in a number of games now, in fact some use it very nicely indeed!

You started with the personal insults, so don’t try to be pious. Calling someone a fanboy in response to them having a genuine problem that they’re by no means alone with in the world is insulting.

“Just a question, when last did you update the firmware of your Xbox360?”

I’d say the Xbox controller is better overall for FPS and driving games while the PS3 version is better for fighters, arcadey type games and action games like DMC4.

Abe, oh come on get real. The SIXAXIS is such rubbish, it’s as cheap as can be to cut costs. You just have to look at the build quality of a DS2 let alone DS3 to see how bad it is. You can break a SIXAXIS with a gentle twist. I can crush it between 2 fingers.

i can see why people still like the sixaxis. Smaller hands for one. And 10 years of practice.

It’s like this mate of mine who insists that a DVORAK layout keyboard is better, but I’ve been typing my whole life on a QWERTY one and can’t (or haven’t spent enough) time learning the better way.

So if abe wants to say he PREFERS it. No argument there. But if a PS3 Fanboi says SIXAXIS > 360 controller, then they need their head checked.

@JimBob I agree with Milesh – I also had DRE’s followed by drive Failure out of warranty and also got mine swapped out on phantom RROD strategy so it might be worth a shot

Re – The Controller debate I have a few comments.
    1) I have big hands and whenever I play Warhawk at a mates place I can feel my hands getting cramped up after a while on account of Sony using Minime as a Product Tester when they designed the Sixaxis
    2) For any variable input application (racers etc) Xbox Triggers sh!ts all over Sony’s buttons I really can’t see how anyone could argue this
    3) I consider the offset analogue inputs ergonomically superior to PS2/3 arrangements but longtime PS users don’t like it so that be a matter of personal preference
    4) In a fight I’d much rather have an Xbox controller. Its extra heft and boomerang like aerodynamics means that a properly thrown xbox controller could temporarily stun a would be assailant. The sixaxis has about as much weight as a politicians promise and short of being accidentally ingested can’t see it causing any harm.

It is a preference thing, but if doobi wants to say the sixaxis is rubbish because he can break it with a twist he’s a bit stupid. I mean i can break a 360 controller by stepping on it but that’s not the fault of the controller.

If you have small hands the 360 controller is difficult to use, if you have big hand the sixaxis will feel silly in your hands. As for the motion sensor in the sixaxis it all depends of how the devs use it. In Lair it’s bad, in RB6V1 it’s pointless, in R&C it’s brilliant.

At first I didn’t play on my PS3 because of the lack of games but recently my 360 has been gathering dust and the PS3 has actually seen more action. Sure at first the PS controller felt strange but it’s actually grown on my more now.

I’m also thankful that the PS3 has only frozen twice on my (with an unstable version of Assassin’s Creed – which I’ve recently patched and am glad to say that it hasn’t frozen yet!)…wish my 360 would behave as nicely!

I also loved the use of the motion sensor in Heavenly Sword…but I do agree that it’s actually kinda pointless in most games and that it should only be used as in R&C and HS.

Either way I love both consoles and at this point it’s only the games library that has me keeping my 360. DLC – never really cared for it on either console with my pathetic internet connection….so which version now? Still haven’t decided but it’ll probably be based on better price and availability of a special edition.

As for the sixaxis, it is purely personal preference. But Im sorry my control feels rock solid Doobi, its got a nice weight and feels tightly constructed, which I simply cannot say about the xbot control!

This has been an interesting read so far! I agree that the X360 controller is much better than the PS3 Controller for the build quality alone!

Thanks for mentioning the d-pad though baba, as I wanted to bring it up. Of all the consoles I have ever had, I find that the 360 controller is my favourite, the ergonomics are fantastic and the layout works well for me. The d-pad however, is terrible and cant be used properly for arcade games or fighting games, and I will never deny that!

I dont know what the big who-ha is about the sixaxis though, about 30 centimetres from my leg, in one of my desk drawers, is an MS controller for the PC that I bought in 1997 (read: long-ass time ago) that has the same motion sensors as the sixaxis, except this one is a fouraxis (one word!)

It was really a great purchase for me, but mostly because analogue sticks hadnt made their way into the industry just yet.

@Fox1 – Yeah that’s my point exactly. I’m a PS3 owner, but I certainly won’t deny that the Xbox is the winner for cross-platform titles.

    @StNick, According to Metacritic

    FNR3 (X360) 86
    FNR3 (PS3) 84

    Oblivion (X360-2006) 94
    Oblivion (PS3-2007) 93

I feel Metacritic.com is a fair judge across all sites so there we have it.

“And I can’t believe I forgot this before, but Fight Night Round 3 is also superior.”

I will bet me life on it that FNR3 is NOT better on the PS3, it is in fact much worse than the Xbox360 version. Remember that EA made FNR3 and we all know how good EA is at making PS3 ports 😉

Oblivion also had a year extra dev time so PS3 still have squat.

I remember everybody said “wait till 2008”. Well, we are here and still waiting…

    heh heh. 😉

I’ve been thinking about what’s been said about the “Episodic content”, I think I’ve got a good idea what it’ll be. We know it’s big, but apparently not “new suburbs”.

I reckon we’re looking at something like “Half Life: Blue Shift”. The original Half life is no loss without it, but it stands alone as a whole game on it’s own.

In a place like Liberty City, does anyone want to miss that?

And back to fanboing 😉 Eurogamer: 60+ to ~3 360 annihilates the PS3 in the versus challenge. Gamers game on the 360. 😉

Enough with these fanboy articles (not directed at you lazygamer). I own a ps3,I bought it over the 360 mainly because of the RROD problems and the fact Ive owned all the other ps’s (brand loyalty I suppose)..never been a fanboy, just been a fan of gaming. These stupid articles running down the competition are just so damn pointless,if it was the other way around (bashing the 360 version),I would have said the same thing……at the end of the day, we all win being able to play such a brilliant game

    @wwemark: I agree!

The real winner must be the game, not the consoles.

@Lazy – I don’t think it is fair to use Metacritic to compare these two games across platforms. Taking Oblivion as an example, the Xbox score is based on 90 reviews, most of these from when the game was still new and breaking ground in every respect. The PS3 version released much later doesn’t really bring anything new to the table, certainly not enough to make someone want to play the whole game again if you’d already played it on Xbox. It’s score on Metacritic is based on only 45 reviews. A side-by-side review would be a more fair reflection.

Granted, the reason these two titles are better on the PS3 is largely because they were released AFTER their Xbox counterparts, giving them a big advantage. But the fact is, Oblivion has improved draw-distance and more content on the PS3 (in the form of the Knights of the Nine add-on).

By EA’s own admission, FNR3 has improved visuals over the Xbox version as well (sweat droplets for example). See here:

    http://www.gametrailers.com/player/15217.html

Having played both the Xbox and PS3 versions, I must concede that the load times for FNR3 on the Playstation are abysmal, almost prohibitive, so perhaps I was a bit hasty in saying that it is BETTER… It does LOOK better though, that’s for sure, and it is the version *I* would rather play.

[re=10905]StNick[/re]: I have to agree with you but the problem is that all reviews are subjective in the end.

Like you say the graphics in FNR3 are better on the PS3 but the game may not be. So it depends very much on what a person is looking for in a game.

    @ StNick

I remember one site doing a comparison between the versions and the ligting looked way better on the Xbox360. Also the crowed was bigger and more detailed on the Xbox360. PS3 version had sweat droplets, but at wat cost 🙂 If I wasn’t so lazy I would have searched for the link and posted it.

Oh? That’s interesting… As I said though, I certainly didn’t find that to be the case. I played a LOT of FNR3 on Xbox360, so when I got my PS3, it was the first game I bought.

Would you really say that the screenshots there backup the claims? The Xbox version is certainly brighter (read more bloom), but not “better”.
