H1Z1 won’t be a pay-to-win hell

For people keen on the premise of DayZ, but unwilling to pay to take part in the game’s rather extended beta, Sony Online Entertainment’s H1Z1 sounds like just the ticket. An open world, large-scale MMO with zombies in it certainly sounds like something cast from DayZ’s mould. the biggest worry though, is that it’ll be free to play – which usually comes with excessive micro-transaction pitfalls. SOE however, has said that it most certainly won’t be pay to win. In fact, pretty much everything you’ll be able to buy is cosmetic.

Speaking on Reddit, SOE’s John Smedly said the company had a meeting to detail how micro-transactions will be implemented in H1Z1.

“Some of our outcomes. Please note I’ll do a comprehensive posting after we’re done with this. We have another meeting Thursday to discuss.

  1. “We will be selling wearables. We felt like this will be a good, fair revenue generator. However – we recognize how important finding wearables in the world is so you’ll be able to find and craft a lot of stuff. We agree that’s something important. We’ve also come up with a pretty awesome idea to let players who kill other players loot stuff. So if a player has a black ski mask and gets killed by another player, that player can wear the ski mask for a few deaths (we have durability in the game. Station Cash wearables won’t degrade at all but when you loot something.. it will degrade. Please note the original player always keeps their SC purchased wearables. This gives the great feeling of whacking some unsuspecting fool who decided to bring a knife to a gun fight. Also – you will be perfectly able to get ghille suits in game cheaply either by crafting or finding them. We won’t sell those. Please note – you still lose everything if you die. If you bought a Station Cash item it will be in a global inventory that is basically anything you bought for real money. We don’t like the idea of a stash you can readily access in a survival game. So yeah, it’s hard. Deal or don’t play.
  2. “We will NOT be selling Guns, Ammo, Food, Water… i.e. That’s kind of the whole game and it would suck in our opinion if we did that.
  3. “Nor will we sell boosts that will impact #2.
  4. “Emote Pack – of course we’ll have the basics for free. But we felt like this is another good and fair revenue generator.
  5. “Character slots – feels reasonable.
  6. Crates – You can find crates sometimes in game. They’re filled with random cool stuff from the store. We’re considering letting you see what’s in them before you buy a key (ala Dota 2.). This idea isn’t fully locked yet.

Smedly added, “That Monetization thread has turned out to be a terrific source of ideas and it also is helping us steer clear of the stuff you just don’t want to see.”

What’s that? A free-to-play game that isn’t all about paying to win? A PC beta will be available in the coming months, with a PS4 version coming along later.

SoE Livestreamed the game last month, here’s what it looks like.

    Good.

I like how they are following the PS2 approach. I have not spent a single unit of currency since I started playing, and the fun-factor has not even diminished a little bit

I subscribed for 12 months @ $9.99. You get 500 SC every month plus double XP and other boosts. Also buying 1000 SC costs $10 so for the 12 months you get 6000 SC. I enjoy the game so immensely that it feels right to support them.

Normally you get 12 certs for your daily log in. You get a maximum of 48 certs a day on a six month subscription.

I usually play TR but I have characters with the other factions as well. So everyday it’s 48 certs for doing nothing.

Just like Planetside 2, we do need local servers though, eventually. This is how you do F2P by the way. If any one else would like to take notice. Oh and TESO can still suck a dick.

You should see the sarcastic comments on the forums when a couple of SA guys mentioned the idea of a local server. Welcome to the internet where everyone is a comedian.

TESO is so sad. They ruined a perfectly good franchise.

Was thinking for a while whether i wanted to buy DayZ but this has changed my mine. This is looking to be the zombie survival game people have been waiting for.

On the topic of zombies : check out ‘project zomboid’
    I don’t know if I need AAA games anymore…
which is a lie 😛 – Batman, Starcraft, Tomb Raider and GTA have convinced me otherwise
Actually what I need is some way to freeze time :-

Zomboid rocks and multiplayer is awesome.

AAA – Witcher, DA:Origins and Star Citizen (with 42mil in the bank that one ain’t indie anymore.)

Freezing time is a bad idea cause it also freezes your pc. You need more something like a time bubble or that temple from DBZ.

Well if we’re going to get technical, an extra requirement is that you don’t age within the time bubble 🙂

Star Citizen is kind of in a grey area i think, and yeah, I forgot about Witcher 3! (and Fallout 3 come to think of it)

They shot themselves in the foot with all the DayZ players the second they announced item “Durability”. Bit sad as it looked like a fun more action-y alternative to DayZ.
