Half-Life 2: Orange Box PS3 Preview – Ouch

55 second read

1UP has been given the opportunity of playing Orange Box on the PS3, as you may know the PS3 version is being developed by EA Games as Valve didn’t seem to want to do anything with it.

After spending a significant amount of time with a near final version of the PS3 game, it’s apparent that this version suffers from a number of technical flaws, which at best merely hinder game play and at worst make the experience downright unplayable

So yet another terrible port over to the PS3, it’s quite sad really that one of the best games out for the 360 is currently unplayable on the PS3. It would be very easy to point and blame EA for this but is that really fair.

If 90% of the developers are struggling to get games running properly on the PS3 maybe we should rather be pointing at the common denominator?

“It would be very easy to point and blame EA for this but is that really fair.”

Actually, yes. I’m sure the PS3 is harder to code for and all the rest, but I’m pretty sure that if Valve had done the port we’d not be reading this.

Episodic content was meant to work on a 6-8 month cycle. The reason why they’ve been taking 18 months per episode is because it wasn’t good enough.

So if Valve had done the PS3 version, you could be certain that
    a) It would have been on par with the 360 version
    b) It probably would have only been released March/April 2008. Because they would have delayed it until it was perfect.

Ah but don’t forget if Valve had done it the PS3 version would never have been made because they don’t like the PS3

So how did you come up with 90%?

Through a very scientific way of sucking it out of my thumb… okay make it 60%, 50%? The figure is unimportant, the fact that a year after the console was released the largest gaming development house in the world is still struggling to develop on it. You can’t sugar coat that

    @Lazy…

Exactly my point. Valve said know. EA owned the IP so got someone else to do it, PS3 owner get screwed.

    PS3 owners…
    Which would YOU choose
    a) Buggy xbox port of an awesome game.
    b) Not have the game at all.

It’s like when i tried playing Final Fantasy VII,Devil May Cry and Silent Hill on the PC… all poorly translated from PS2 code and a waste of my time ruining my perception of good games.

EA is clearly falling behind other 3rd parties in the quality of its PS3 games – as the near-perfect conversions of Assasins Creed and CoD 4 show (I’ve played them on both systems, and there’s honestly nothing to separate them).

It’s very much a factor of the minimal effort that EA is putting into the platform – which is too bad for them, considering that install base considered, AC and CoD4 both did very nicely on the PS3.

No wonder EA is in serious danger of becoming second-largest publisher in the world – I think in recent weeks, Activision has outpeformed it by far.

Im sorry but EA are just lack luster slack arsed idiots,
they know that its hard to code for the PS3 and yet they still put second rate devs on games, what do they expext?

    **sigh**

    To quote from another article

” I guess we’ve all learned that the PS3 just wasn’t made to support three year old PC gaming technology. ”

Who wants to play three year old games anyway ? Orange Box titles suck horribly when compared with the like of COD4 or RFOM

@Burns, Happy to report that Portal is excellent on the PS3 version as well….

Yeah, thanks Lazy! Lucky for them. That said I was questioning hilt_ctn’s opinion that the titles sucked. I mean portal has had raving reviews!

LOL ! My point is simple. We buy new games/consoles/PCs/toys to enjoy to advance our cause, not go backwards

For me this is yet another Yank attempt to squeeze money out of people for a product that’s already been peddled to death

Minor problems, quickly sorted out. And still nothing like all the 360s left smoking and RRODing after Forza 2 and Halo 3.

You really should try Portal first before offering your opinion.
Don’t write it off because the PS3 has problems playing games which should easily fly.
Secondly, I guess you don’t support the PSN store then – I mean there are stacks of old titles for download? Thirdly, the fact that the PS3 IS able to play games far older than 3 years really makes that articles statement incorrect.

Orange Box is cheaper than other retail games because it’s Ep2, Team Fortress and Portal. HL2 and Ep1 were like a bonus for those who didn’t play them on the XBOX or PC. i.e it’s not 3 year old tech.

And how can you even try to compare RFOM to Orange Box (especially Ep2!… they are leagues apart) and Portals brilliant.

Gotta, love fridays. But seriously I am sick of bad news for the ps3, everytime something goes wrong everyone jumps on it and goes mental. I dont give a stuff if this game doesnt work, I dont have enough time or cash for all the new and available games. So lets just move on and enjoy ourselves! Isnt that why you paid for a console?

I’m a firm believer in that programmers have become lazy. Due to SDK’s like Visual Studio etc. just about anyone nowadays can become a programmer. Old “hardcore” language like C & C++ are falling to the wayside to languages like C#.

So just blame it on all the development houses that created packages that any Tom, Dick & Harry can code with… when something a tad more challenging arrives, they just roll over and plays dead.

I am a programmer myself btw (fluent in quite a few languages), so it’s not as if I don’t know what I’m talking about… I think 😉
