Dead or Alive 5

So between our seriously packed schedule yesterday I found 10 minutes to browse the floor at Gamescom and happened across the Dead or Alive 5 stand, now as I’ve said before the Dead or Alive series is easily one of my favourites so I couldn’t resist taking the opportunity to give the game a solid once over.

So after standing in line next to the most skimpily dressed product marketing executive I’ve ever seen, I was given the opportunity to show my elite Dead or Alive abilities against another random German who was in the line.

The character choice screen is pretty standard with a box of little heads at the bottom of the screen and as you choose one the entire character is then displayed up top with another option to change their costumes.

I started off with Brad Wong (the drunken master) who is easily my favourite character in the DOA series and we leapt into battle. The first thing you’ll notice is that the fighting mechanic hasn’t changed much from the previous iterations and fans of the series will very quickly come to grips with the controls and Dead or Alive style.

Dead or Alive has always had stunning set design and DOA5 definitely doesn’t let us down on that aspect with sprawling interactive arenas being the order of the day. Our first match took place in a wooden room and as we threw each other around the arena, all manner of destruction occurred with tables breaking, characters flying through splintering walls and I even managed to shoulder drop my opponent right through the floor.

In our second round I grabbed one of the female characters, for SCIENCE, and took her for a spin to check out the boob physics that everyone has been making a noise about.

Honestly though I really didn’t notice much different from the previous versions who were all quite visceral in that sense anyway.

The new stage was once again really interactive and the fighting style was entirely different.

And that was all the time I got as our local distributor unfortunately didn’t organise any hands-on time with the title so I was kicked out and now have to wait until the title is released like everyone else.

Oh the one major negative was the loading times between fights, it was ridiculously long on the PS3 version I played. I can’t say if it’s any better on any other platform or if the game is still going through polish and that will be fixed. If not then that will kill its review scores, the loading was insane.

Final thoughts are that the game is a great sequel to a solid franchise, if you liked the previous ones you are going to love the upgraded graphics and arenas but it’s nothing groundbreaking. If you didn’t like the previous DOA’s then this one isn’t going to change your mind.

It’s coming out on the 28th of September in Europe and hopefully SA.
