Harmonix: No Rock Band 3 in 2009

At CES, Harmonix said there will be no Rock Band 3 this year as they want to spend more time with Rock Band: Beatles.

Thank the Lord that Harmonix wont be pulling an Activision and running the series into the ground (ala Guitar Hero). This pleases me immensely and I hope Harmonix continues to make sure quality always outweighs quantity. While Rock Band: Beatles is no better, in theory, than Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, at least they can put some polish on and make it a good expansion pack without having to quickly kick it out the door so work on a numbered instalment can continue.

Activision could really learn from this. They recently released a AC/DC disc expansion thing that was essentially an overpriced track pack. What doesn’t bode well for Guitar Hero is the CEO of Activision said, on record, they wont make a game unless it can be exploited. Have you counted the amount of Guitar Hero games since Activision took over? I count 7.

To be fair, at least we get Guitar Hero games here. Guitar Hero 2, with two guitars, was one of the best multiplayer experiences I have ever had. However, R3100 I will not pay for a game (World Tour I’m looking at you.)

What do you think?

I have to admit, R3100 is a lot for one game, but the experience has been well worth it, and still is. The GH series has had the most game time on my PS3.

Activision did no such thing. The AC/DC release was Rock Band, thus an EA/Harmonix release.

ok I have to correct you slightly here

Rockband = Harmonix is the Developer, EA is the publisher
Guitar Hero = Neversoft is the Developer, Activision is the Publisher

but in any case I was hoping you could clarify what “Thank the Lord that Harmonix wont be pulling an Activision and running the series into the ground (ala Guitar Hero)” means? you count 7 versions of the game because firstly cause Guitar Hero has been around since 2005, as apposed to Rockbands 2007 release. A yearly release of games is common with expansions coming between (ala EA) there’s a certain amount of demand for the game and if the fans want it then the developers try hard to get it, also you have to realise that there are certain costs for licensing songs and Guitar Hero is the original reason why artists all of a sudden started giving licenses to play their songs on the game. these could definitely influence costs on the DLC. And as was stated AC/DC was a rockband release

and the cost of World Tour has been a tiresome argument, and I don’t think that Megarom can explain themselves anymore to justify the cost.

Well Megarom said that it was expensive due to the fact that they flew in the copies, and the copies that are being shipped in are going to be cheaper. I think we’re all waiting to see how much cheaper that’ll be. I see that NAG is advertising GH instruments sold seperatly in March. I can only assume that this is the shipped batch … let’s see if Megarom keeps that promise.

As for the Rockband:Beatles and GH:Metallica. I’m looking forward to both, but i really hope that they have some mechanism for keep the songs on the hard drive. I’d hate to have to change disks all the time to have access to my whole rhythm game library. They did it for RB1/RB2, let’s hope that Beatles game lets you do that same as it’s an awesome feature, hope they learn from the mistakes they made wit hthe AC/DC pack.

Harmonix ARE running the series into the ground. Just like GH, we’re seeing spinoffs that could just as easily have been DLC (AC/DC and the Track Packs included). I’d rather see Rock Band 3 than a band specific version any day, but neither are justified unless they plan to implement major changes (such as a keyboard instrument for example).

As far as I know it’s only AC/DC that is not available as DLC but the track packs are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rock_Band_track_packs

I seriously think Rockband needs a new IP and a new fretboard. that black fretboard bores the crap out of me not to mention those little redangles makes it hardto see when to strum even on a 42” FULL HD TV

interesting you should say that. Most people find the rectangles easier than the circles. Different strokes i guess.
