Has Microsoft forced a drop in price of the PlayStation 4

1 min read

According to insiders the PlayStation 4 has been selling like gangbusters locally even at the higher than wanted price of R6799. The Xbox One is being hammered by the media all over the world but the one thing they have done right is that they are going to be landing locally at a much more palatable R6299 in September.

This oddity in pricing makes South Africa one of the only countries in the world, if not the only country, to have an Xbox One at a lesser price than the PlayStation 4. I personally expected Ster Kinekor to react and drop the price of the PlayStation 4 when the Xbox One was released but it appears they’ve taken the bull by the horns and have sneakily rolled out a brand new price point.

We’ve received no official confirmation from anyone regarding this but while window shopping this morning we noticed that not only can you get the PS4 for a cut price R5 999 from Pick n Pay but that both Takealot and Kalahari have also dropped their prices to match the Xbox One at R6 299.

Raru, the local newcomers to online shopping locally, have also dropped the price but only to R6 447.

The rest of our retailers still seem to be around the R6 799 mark but I expect this to change moving forward. If this is in reaction to the aggressive pricing strategy from Microsoft then whatever side of the console war you align to you can thank Microsoft for making it better for us locals.

    This is why I wait.
Let Sony and MS battle it out. Meanwhile any glitches and stuff get sorted out and in the end I’ll be buying a better system for cheaper and I’ve avoided all the Day 1 crap.

Or they cut costs in manufacturing to bring pricing down and you end up with a cheaper console but it wont last as long….

My falcon Xbox 360 has been around for nearly 4 years. And my third gen PS2 is still boss. The smart thing to do is to wait. You get your console at a cheaper price AND generally they are more reliable (although I have heard the first gen of PS2 slims were terrible, but then again.. never get the first generation of re-model).

And that is why I like AMD to always be around. They make Intel drop their prices and Nvidia look bad with bloated drivers and horrible equipment.

I think it’s the other way around with Intel vs AMD these days. Intel is on the warpath.

Still valid. If AMD was not here my Core I7 would have cost R20000 instead of R10000 even though Intel is making a better chip at this moment. Nvidia however has every right to be scared of them.

No. It’s the older SKU’s that weren’t selling that’s being dropped.

Even at R5999 it’s not worth it. You still have to buy an overpriced game.

Just before E3 the PS4 got a newer model number indicating better wifi and Bluetooth and a few more tweaks. It’s not a major revision.

o.O i thought this was just people shredding away at their thumb sticks until it started happening recently to me. I don’t even game that hard at the moment. my dual shock 2’s and 3’s rubbers are still fine till this day but the dual shock 4 thumb sticks rubber are horrid

            August 9, 2014 at 10:39

It’s definitely a problem. I also thought folks were being far too hard on their sticks and then mine started to tear (last month – granted after a solid number of months use… but still). I just went to Gadget Time in Canal Walk and bought a pair of rubber thumb grips. Clipped them on, and continued gaming. Works fine for me.

Trolling an article that is trolling something is the equivalent of building an E-Toll system so people start using the Gautrain.

And yeah I am trolling you just in case that was not obvious. 🙂

When the PS4 drops under R4000, I’ll definitely get a second unit. Hopefully that means the boner will be between 3500 – 3000 randelas. At that price, I’ll definitely unleash a boner on my poor TV stand. I doubt the thing will be able to hold it… damn boners are massive!!! Have you seen how massive those watercooler defy washing machines are? You could kill a man with them….

LOL. I just picked up a PS4 and will also eventually be buying the Bone. Problem I have now is freaking space. I have 2 x X360’s, a PS2, a PS3, a PS4, a Wii (which I bought for the Metroid collection and SMB for the kids), a media player and DSTV all hooked up. Sad, I know. Contemplating converting a room into a dedicated gaming room separate from the lounge with all my consoles and my arcade machine.

The last 10 Xbox fans are like endangered snow leopards. We need to do all we can to protect them. I propose rounding them up and putting them in a zoo. We must protect them so that future generations can experience the joys of a xboner.

To be honest though, I think this has less to do with the imminent arrival of the One and Done, and more to do with retailers trying to remain competitive among each other. The fact that the Boner is being released soon is merely a coincidence. Prices for the PS4 has slowly come down as many of the retailers have been in a bidding war to get PS gamers to buy from them. The demand is very high, and you’d rather have gamers buy from you then from the Dion Wired down the road.
