Has the Wii U’s release date and price been revealed?

This joke will never get old.

As we edge on ever closer to the release of Nintendo’s new HD console, we’re still in the dark as to when its actual release, or pricing will be. Nintendo’s said it wants to release before this year’s holiday season, so it’s probable that the information will be released soon; quite probably at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Amazon’s hardware supplier, Video Product Distributors (who also supplies Blockbuster) might have just let the cat out of the bag a little early.

According to Nintendo Life, the distributor has SKU, price and release date information for Wii U in North America available on its site – and it falls in line with all the and expectations to date. interestingly, the site lists three different SKU’s – quite possibly bundled with different games and hardware, but offers no real information on what those bundles might contain.

Here’s what their system says:

  • WIIU SYSTEM – GM – 11/11/12 $249.99
  • WIIU SYSTEM W/ – GM – 11/11/12 $299.99
  • WIIU SYSTEM 349 W/ – GM – 11/11/12 $349.99

According to that, the system will release on 11 November this year, at a price of $249 – roughly R2100. Of course, our games and hardware tend to come in through European distribution channels, adding a bit of a price premium, so we’re looking at something closer to about R2799 for the base system. What then, do those other bundles contain? Maybe a system with the Pro controller packed in, and another with a pack-in game, possibly New Super Mario Bros Wii U, or the minigame collection NintendoLand.

It’s pretty unusual for Nintendo to release multiple SKU’s at launch – so it’s worth taking this with a sizeable pinch of salt.  If true though, it’s a pretty incredible price point for the first of the “next-gen” systems – and could go a long way to securing Nintendo’s “win” for the next round. I have to say I’m pretty excited for the Wii U – not just for the system itself, but in its potential to inject a little bit of excitement in to the gaming industry as a whole, which, let’s face it, has gotten a little dull.
