Hatred

Violence in videogames is a not a new thing. It’s often blamed for the sort of egregious violence seen in school shootings or other massacres perpetuated by people with issues that run far further than liking videogames. There have been very few games that solely focus on hate-fuelled massacring of innocent people though, with just Postal instantly springing to mind. Now there’s another.

It’s called Hatred, and it’s coming from indie developer Destructive Creations. It’s all about cold-bloodedly killing everything that moves.

“My name is not important. What is important is what I’m going to do. I just fu*kin’ hate this world. And the human worms feasting on its carcass. My whole life is just cold, bitter hatred. And I always wanted to die violently. This is the time of vengeance and no life is worth saving. And I will put in the grave as many as I can. It’s time for me to kill. And it’s time for me to die. My genocide crusade begins here,” says the stereotypically long-haired, gothic killer.

It all seems like violence, for the sake of violence – and it’s not something that the gaming industry needs at all. It really seems like it was made for controversy’s sake. And yet, it looks like something I want to play. It’s an isometric shooter where you play the bad guy, with an interesting aesthetic. Here’s the official blurb:

Hatred is an isometric shooter with a disturbing atmosphere of mass killing, where player takes the role of a cold blood antagonist, who is full of hatred for humanity. It’s a horror, but here YOU are the villain. Wander the outskirts of New York State, seek for victims on seven free-roam levels. Fight against law enforcement and take a journey into the antagonist’s hateful mind. Gather equipment of the dead ‘human shields’, to spread Armageddon in the society. Destroy everything on your way of hunt and fight back when it’s disturbed.

And a trailer.

The game was made using Epic’s Unreal engine – but it’s not something Epic’s too happy about.

“Epic Games isn’t involved in this project,” a statement from the company says. “Unreal Engine 4 is available to the general public for use ‘for any lawful purpose,’ and we explicitly don’t exert any sort of creative control or censorship over projects. However, the video is using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic, and we’ve asked for the removal of our logo from all marketing associated with this product.”

What do you think? Should we ban this sick filth or does this look like something you’d want to play? (You degenerate scum!)

I seem to have missed the part where I mentioned that postal was ‘humorous’

It would be nice if you read the comment first, then actually took the time to think about your comment before you actually post it.

And yes, Postal was ‘FUN’, if you were looking for something to keep you busy when you had nothing better to do at that time, Postal was the ‘go to guy’.

So if you think Postal was a piece of shit, that’s your own business, but seriously consider that perhaps nobody really cares what you have to say, let the people who enjoyed it be!

I think in general a game differs in the way that you are in control of what is happening. You actively choose where it goes from here.

Most of the time in movies there is someone that fights against this kind of behavior which does change the way people perceive it.

I do agree that movies also have an impact on people though and for some reason they are just exempt from this argument. So I kind of differ and agree with you.

I’ve played plenty of games where you chose right or wrong. I generally do play through as evil first then again as good. Difference with those games is it didn’t escalate or need to go to the depths of this one.

Where this game goes it can open a can of worms for what is acceptable or not. Do you really want to push the boundary and accept this game? Where is the line? Do we accept the next game that has hardcore rape in it? How far behind the moral curtain do you want to go in a virtual sense?

You specified hardcore.. should we accept standard rape?

What if the hardcore rape gave you the understanding of why someone deserved to be punished. If we want videogames to be seen as an artform and to be able to portray emotions then should there be limits?

This isn’t going to be sold at BT Games and will never be acceptable in a mainstream game, but does that mean we shouldn’t allow it to exist?

Just read a tweet now from a guy I know stating this is will be the best game ever and he can’t wait for it which is cause for concern in my eyes.
The guy in question has mental health issues with tendency to be violent and confuse reality and fantasy. He doesn’t know why he wants to burn and destroy everything. He has spent time in Tara, been with doctors and is on medication. From what I’ve recently seen he is ok but I still would be careful around him. Knowing his history, do you think it would be healthy for this guy to play the game? Or for a game like this to exist for him to play?

Should we castrate ourselves because psychopaths exists? Your argument is like we should not include drugs/gambling/sex/violence in a game because there are recovering tik users/gambling addicts, sex offenders and the waterkloof 4 playing them. I say screw that. They need professional help and should out of their own and with peer support stay away from stuff like that.

I’d also rather have these people get their fix in a game than in real life.

          • Guild

            October 17, 2014 at 15:28

I’m not saying castrate ourselves but I am conflicted on this game. This pure form of absolute hate to go and kill innocent people who beg for their life in graphic ways for me is over the top and not a necessity. But at the same token I support freedom of choice so I guess it really comes down to the individual and if this is what they want, buy it otherwise don’t. I won’t be getting it.

And he does receive professional help. Problem is I know he will get the game anyway no matter what others say. He does have an issue of distinguishing reality and fantasy and is violent. This game fits his profile almost to the tee where he could be the protagonist. I dunno if the game would actually help him or not. Maybe it could be a healthier alternative for him or destructive one which leads him to try reenact the game. Personally, I hope it helps but if it turns the other way, I hope his sister is quick to see the signs and get him committed again.

Sorry I used the word hardcore just to be more descriptive. And no rape should not be accepted in a game at all.

I don’t need a game to give me an understanding of why someone deserves to be punished for rape. It’s my view and I know it’s extreme but they should get the death penalty.

I’m 100% behind freedom of expression but there should be limits on what is acceptable as artform. People seem to want to push it further and further into the cesspool of our human nature and essential barbaric side. But do we really need to go there? Do we need to pull each other down further?

I don’t think this game needs to exist but if it does, then there is choice for people to get it or not. I chose not to.

A game like this should have as much combat realism as possible.
No 4 second regeneration, no superhuman feats of agility, strength or endurance, no bullet resistance, nothing that a normal human couldn’t do.
1 bullet should be enough for the cops to put a stop to you as long as they hit you in a vital point.

In psychology there is the argument that violent games give you an outlet so that you don’t actually go out there and do it, but too much exposure to a game like this at a young ago won’t have a good impact IMO.

I see myself as very liberal, but I just don’t think this game will have a positive impact at all and I am rather close to thinking it should just not get made, BUT then again there are a lot of other games that push other agendas too.

I would love a game where you play as a honest-to-evilness villian, but it would need to have an actual plot and purpose.
Let me be the evil tyrant who is conquering an empire, impaling my enemies on spikes so that they spend days of agony before dying in order to drive the fear of true suffering into my followers as I rule with an iron-fist.

Play as a US solider and kill the Muslim?

Or maybe some extra DLC like adding in kids, babies, pregnant woman or even more weapons to violently kill.

True. There are games playing as US killing terrorists or the other way around and in majority of them, they have guns and shoot back and in the end it’s a poor excuse for BF or COD. And yes, proper media reporting on US bombings would diminish support for the war on terror since war is money and the US is the biggest weapons supplier in the world.

I still don’t think the community needs a game like this. But it’s choice and the freedom of such. So I chose not to get it or support it.

While it is barely a plot, it’s something I can somewhat understand and get behind.
What I can’t get behind is going around randomly killing people.
That is such a pointless and inefficient way to bring about the end of the world.
At the least you should be breaking into a nuclear missile silo and bringing about a proper Apocalypse followed by centuries of nuclear winter so that the few living creatures that manage to survive the Apocalypse are forced to struggle for their very existence.

I dont want to play any game where you’re killing innocent people begging for their life. If this game was a delve into the mind of a killer/psychopath I’d consider it, but its just violent dirt. Nope, not gonna support this. Gaming industry does not need this

Yeah, I have to agree with this.

If it was a game about The Punisher going out to just exceptionally violently slaughter the mob who is killing innocents or something then I might go for it, but there is definitely a lingering impact this might have on people.

TLDR: It is just too much needless violence IMO

What makes it offensive, or filth?

If we can agree that games are art, why see this game as anything less than art.

Ultraviolence is an aspect of art that gets lauded in some cases and decried in others.

In Film, we have American History X and a fair number of Tarantino movies.

In Music, we have Death Metal, and Grindcore and Powerviolence. (yes those last two ARE genres)

    What makes games Different?

you’re killing NORMAL innocent people. We’re not exploring the mind of a killer. We get a short monologue about how the protagonist hates the world and wants people to die. but none of that is the main focus. Its just about stabbing and killing NORMAL god damn people…This is the furthest thing from art

Watch the trailer again. He states it’s time for vengeance. For what? His guinea pig died and he couldn’t get a new one? His mommy didn’t hold him enough or change his diapers quick enough? And why would you want to run around as a protagonist that sounds like a some screwed up emo who didn’t get enough lollipops as a kid? There so many laughable things with that opening dialogue it’s really a joke

    Kill innocent people? Check!
    Shootouts with law enforcement? Check!
    Violent intimidation? Check!
    Blow stuff up? Check!
Torture? Check! (This part in GTA5 was totally unnecessary)

Trevor in GTA 5 pretty much describes the psychotic sociopath antagonist in Hatred yet it’s one of biggest selling game of all time. What does that tell you?

I have always used the same argument to justify things you see in pixel form that other people don’t agree with.

But I think that it is starting to become a bit of an old way of reasoning.

I can not say it is just a game and play this while condeming someone doing it in reallife. I have never been one for blaming human violence on mediums like games, but what will happen when the next big shooting occurs and “Hatred” gets mentioned as a influence. Looking at the content, it would be a tough one to argue.

Don’t think this game really has a place in the current landscape (Gamergate) gaming is finding itself in and it isn’t helping the argument that gamers are generally a good clean fun bunch of people. But, that is just MY opinion and not necessarily yours

Again. it is a video game. In games like GTA and Saints Row, I have sessions where I simply drive about, running over people and taking potshots with a rifle at innocents walking the streets.
Why? It’s therapy. In real life, I drive like a good citizen should: responsible and within the speed limits.
But when I get behind a console or my PC? That is where I want to let go of a days worth of tension and frustration.
Playing a bad guy in a game does not make you a bad guy in real life. People need to learn that…

I think people are slow and delusional to think this is anything more then a game. If people try and look at a game to find deeper meaning in its message we run into what we have here. Pretty pathetic to think about how hypocritical people can be. Every one throws a fit about the fur trade over seas, But they forget they live in America home of the most slaughter houses in the world.

So all in all if you can’t depict reality from a game then you have deeper issues. If we ban games then why can’t we ban books? I mean I see menwomen reading books about lust and cheating on there spouses and sorts of sexual content. As you can see statics show the divorce rate is quite high. Books must be responsible for that its the only explanation ????
