Have EA and Steam made up?

For a while, there’s been nary an EA game to be seen on Valve’s digital distribution network, Steam. One reason for that, it has to be assumed, is the launch of EA’s own competing service, Origin. EA’s also alluded to the fact that the fallout was because Valve insisted on serving patches and DLC through Steam, while EA preferred to interface with their consumers directly – as we say with Mass Effect 2’s Cerberus Network.

It all might not matter anymore – as it’s possible that the two have made up.

The demo for 38 Studios’ Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning has shown up on Steam, without any fanfare , announcements or press releases. EA’s announced that Mass Effect 3 won’t be coming to Steam on launch day – and might not even show up on the service at all.

“During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time,” said Bioware’s Chris Priestly. Well, Why not? “Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service,” he says “which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. “

So what gives?

My best guess is they’ve realised that despite the big names behind Amalur, it’s an untested, unknown property – and it’s best shot at doing well at retail is by giving it as much exposure, through as many services as possible.
