So last week I posted about how since the Warner announcement Blu-Ray sales had shot through the roof and HD-DVD sales had died.
Well many were quick to ask how the sales had been affected so quickly as the main stream buying public had not heard the news yet. Well one week later and now things are looking even more suspicious.
The same company that ran the last research has published their latest research and it seems like HD-DVD has made an impressive come back, and here I was thinking I wouldn’t be able to post about this war anymore.
So now the conspiracy theory can start, did the Blu-Ray group go on a mass buying spree just after the announcement to attempt to push home the gravity of the situation?
I wonder if we can find out what titles it was that were sold and whether or not the HD-DVD sales stayed level and the Blu-Ray sales sky rocketed?

what would be interesting is to get values to those percentages, the reason I say this is that for all we know HD-DVD could’ve sold the same amount of units in both cases (or similair) where as their may have been a hot title or just a mad rush for Blu-Ray disks, but when Blu ray values are compared I reckon the second chart will be considerably less so than the first… IMO 😛 then again I haven’ read the full article… 🙂

Probably due to the specials on HD DVD’s in the wake of the announcement. Amazon is giving 53% off some of it’s HD DVD’s. I think it was Unsafest who said the death of HD may provide a flood of cheap HD merchandise – I believe his premonition was right. I’m going to snapping up a whole lot of movies at reduced selling prices – I’ll definately be giving Blu-Ray movies a skip while the specials last – an undertaking most dual format owners will probably adopt over the short term.

The real sales numbers are in the low teens for both formats.
That first week with the lower numbers for HD DVD represents a period when there were some sales incentives on Blu-ray players combined with the expiration of sales promotions to retailers on HD DVD players. This meant that HD DVD players were not on sale that week. News about Warner at CES probably contributed too, but the following week’s sales numbers demonstrate that one really needs to look at a few weeks or months of sales data to be able to report on a trend accurately. The NPD Group, the ones who maintain these numbers, even came out to say so after someone on the Blu-ray side leaked those earlier numbers.
