Hunt Showdown (2)

I don’t like hunting. Or more precisely, I find the idea of sports hunting to be utterly despicable. There are times when it’s necessary to cull a herd or when people need to survive and I can even condone a lion park allowing one king of the jungle to be killed so that the funds can be used to preserve the rest of the pride, but hunting for pleasure…I just don’t get it.

There’s a proper compromise though: Virtual hunting. You want to slay a beast of the wild without having to swat away those pesky mosquitos or refer to Velociraptors as “clever girls”? Video games have your back. There’s a ton of them on the market, stretching back years and asking you to slay all manner of furry buggers across the forests of North America through to the wild open plains of the African savannah.

Crytek has a new idea for hunting however, with their upcoming Hunt: Showdown. Here’s some quick gameplay of it in action via IGN:

In Hunt: Showdown, it’s you versus monsters that very much want you dead. It’s hunting on an even ground, which sounds fantastic. Want in on it? Well if you’re lucky, you might just join the closed alpha that will pop up soon. Here’s the official description from Crytek:

Starting on January 31st, a select group of PC gamers will be able to play Hunt: Showdown regularly as part of the game’s Closed Alpha testing phase, via Steam. During Closed Alpha, the Hunt team will be testing gameplay, balancing, and backend functionality, as well as collecting feedback from the community. Closed Alpha testers will be randomly chosen from the sign-up list, and those chosen will receive an email invite.

Hunt: Showdown is a competitive multiplayer bounty hunting game that mixes PvP with PvE elements in a handcrafted sandbox environment. During each match up to ten players, hunting solo or in teams of two, track and kill gruesome monsters for a bounty—when they aren’t tracking and killing each other in order to steal it. During Hunt’s Closed Alpha phase new content—in the form of new weapons, equipment, traits, and ranks—will be continuously released and tested.

If you want to try your luck, you can sign up right here and hope that you luck your way into one of the multiple waves that invites will be sent out in. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to engage in the one animal that absolutely deserves to be hunted into extinction: Mosquitos. My body is a battlfield of red itch wounds thanks to my power tripping and thus leaving me without any protection against the bastard swarms.
