Much like global warming, we know that the Playstation 4 is out there somewhere, but we just can’t prove that it actually exists. What does exist though, is the controller for that upcoming next-gen console. And it’s going to smother you with social interactivity.
Over at the Game Developers Conference, Sony gave a presentation on their mythical Playstation 4 that Polygon picked up on, detailing all kinds of technical wizardry and whatnot. TERRAFLOPS!
But the important thing here, was how the console, and as an extendion of it, the controller will factor in the social sphere that Sony is busy punting for it. One idea shown, was that selecting a game would load up comments from friends, DLC listings and other pertinent information.
Other details shown were;
- When the share button is held down, a screenshot is taken
- You will be able to have more than 100 friends on the PS4, a limit that is currently in place on the PS3
- The light bar will also indicate player position: Player 1 is blue, player 2 is red, player 3 is green and player 4 or Geoff is pink
- Your real name being visible on your PSN ID is optional, but if said profile is linked with your Facebook account, the real name takes center stage.
Sounds interesting, provided that it’s content that isn’t forcefed to gamers. On that note, I’d like to beg Sony and Microsoft to please, please include a proper battery capacity percentage meter on the damn controllers.
This three bars of power crap is forever leaving me with flat batteries that I don’t even know about. Much like last night when I decided to sit down for some Bioshock Infinite and my controller promptly decided to tell me to go screw myself, before powering down.
And on that note, here’s a picture of Sony CEO Kaz Hirai with the actual PS4:

Kaz the Troll. What a legend hahaha!!
Also, that controller is sexy. The Light bar features for each player sounds awesome. No more asking “WHO THE HELL IS PLAYER 2” When playing with some mates. Nice.

Kaz is actually CGI created via the FOX engine! (Shamelessly stolen from Geoff)

You say Fox, Sir?
Kaz 2.0 is being developed by Foxy minions as we speak.

Not that it really matters but the header pic isn’t of the actual controller but rather a mock-up?

That controller looks horribly small and flimsy. I was hoping we would finally see the Boomerang controller with the PS4.

Great to finally have a brand new controller after 3 generations of the same thing. Just one question will it be motion sensitive ala sixxas and touchscreen devices.
