Here’s the PC you’ll need to play FIFA 16

Ideally, I’d have Darryn write about the PC specs for FIFA 16 – because I rather enjoy the nonsense he comes up with when he’s clueless (which is almost always).  But seeing as he knows nothing about PC specs or football, the resultant fury might just melt the internet. Instead, I’m going to prattle a bit about the PC you’ll need to run FIFA 16 if you plan on playing it on your PC in his stead.

That’s despite knowing close to nothing about football myself. Every four years, when the world cup rolls around and my interest in football in momentarily piqued, somebody – at my behest – tries to explain the offside rule to me. Many world cups later, and I still don’t get it.

What I do understand though, is the relatively modest requirements for FIFA 16 on the PC. Here’s the sort of machine you’ll need to kick a ball about on your machine.

Recommended Specifications:

  • OS: Windows 8/8.1/10 -64-bit
  • CPU: Intel i5-2550K @ 3.4Ghz
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Hard Drive Space Required: 15.0 GB
  • Supported Video Cards: ATI Radeon HD 6870, NVIDIA GTX 460
  • DirectX: 11.0

Minimum Required Specifications:

  • OS: Windows 7/8/8.1 -64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 @ 3.1GHz
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Hard Drive Space Required: 15.0 GB
  • Minimum Supported Video Cards: ATI Radeon HD 5770, NVIDIA GTX 650
  • DirectX: 11.0

Even the recommended specs are relatively modest, and well within the realm of anybody who considers themselves a mustard-race elitist. Hopefully, EA continues to take the PC platform seriously. It’s only just recently that they’ve added that “next gen sheen” to FIFA’s PC port, with FIFA 14 missing out on the Ignite engine that was the biggest back-of-the-box selling point for that iteration of the game.

“Even though there were some PCs on the marketplace that could run that engine, the lion’s share of PCs on the marketplace could not,” EA boss Andrew Wilson said at the time  “And the majority of the gamer base that was playing the game on PC did not have a PC spec that would work with that.”

That was nearly two years ago, and while there’s still a modicum of truth to that, the PC gaming landscape is a little bit different-  with it entirely possible to build an affordable PC that outpaces the modern consoles. When games actually work, anyway.

FIFA 16 is out on everything that plays games and isn’t made by Nintendo in September. Its PC port should work fine – though games like FIFA will always be better on console, if you ask me.

In related news, the cover stars of the game were recently announced, and here in SA it’ll feature exactly who you’d expect: Lionel Messi. In Other regions, Messi will share the cover with another athlete, who’ll change accordingly:

  • Australia: Stephanie Catley and one more athlete to be revealed on August 13.
  • Mexico – Marco Fabián
  • France: Antoine Griezmann
  • Latin America: Juan Cuadrado
  • Japan: Shinji Kagawa in his Borussia Dortmund kit.
  • UK: Jordan Henderson

The 460 may be an older card, but it has a significantly higher memory bus and memory bandwidth. The 460 also has higher pixel rate, more ROPS, and more texture mapping units.

If the game require memory bandwidth and not “raw” pixel crunching, the 460 is the better card for the job.

What worries me is that Nvidia is letting such old cards be thrown into the specs sheet for this game (which is a huge AAA game), I was waiting to see a GTX 960 for recommended since it would boost their sales.

It’s a huge game, sure – but FIFA’s appeal goes way beyond the “core” gamer, so they’d want to make it run on as many machines as possible. Would boost sales for more than it being a “Benchmarking” game would.

A GTX960 for a game with geometry this low is way overkill, honestly. I don’t see the need.

      It’s probably a 960, but 4’s look like 9’s to Geoff.

Laugh it up, chuckles, but the 460’s a better card than the 650. Higher numbers != better. 😛

Higher memory bandwidth and a wider bus. Frostbite/Ignite loves adding on those textures!
