88th Academy Awards - Press Room

2018 is the twilight of a generation. The beginning of the end for the current line of systems and the games cropping up on them, as new hardware is bound to be revealed in the very near future. Like the generations that came before, this particular era is getting ready to go out with a bang as the year that was managed to produce some incredible games.

We saw the glory of a war god reborn, we felt the joy of navigating through New York City while spinning webs and we faced stories of a personal nature on a scale that may have been more indie in design but was truly epic in scope. How do you even begin to sum up 2018? How do you condense a year’s worth of gaming into any single rewards category?

Well the Game Awards 2018 certainly did just that, with results that probably weren’t surprising. God of War walked away with the top honour of game of the year, as well as several other nods of the head in other categories. Here’s the full list of winners in bold below (Cheers Polygon):

Monster Hunter was a surprise for me when you consider what they were up against. With respects to GOTY, it was always going to be a close one between RDR and GOW. Either would have been deserving of the award.

How did Overwatch beat CS:GO as best esports game? Boggles my mind

Overwatch is way better as an esports because it’s not confined to the same goddamned teams who’ve been playing it forever. They actually have proper national, city-based leagues. It’s not stagnant, way more exciting. Might not actually be a better esports GAME, but it’s way better at being anything close to *sport* for players and spectators alike.

To be fair, there’s more excitement in Overwatch than Cricket.

Ever watched Overwatch esports? It’s like a trippy psytrance video with someone screaming gibberish in various pitches for 20 minutes.

Not if you watch the real league, then it’s highly professional and way more like a real sport than anything else… just avoid the retards on Twitch who scream at the screen for no reason

My biggest criticism is that there is a lot of play-by-play casting and not enough time for analysis. Other esports and even sports balance those things pretty well, I was even able to learn a ton about DOTA having never played it.

I have. I also play Overwatch from time to time. So I understand what the guys are talking about. Also that weird high-pitched excitement – it’s just not cricket!

Glad that GoW won, even though I liked RDR2 a lot more. Thats just personal taste. In the end, GoW getting GOTY & Best Direction, and RDR2 getting Best score/Music, Best narrative & Best Performance(Roger Clark) feels very appropriate.

Bad Son Simulator must truly be remarkable if it beat RDR2(my game of this generation so far) to get GOTY. I’ll have to make a plan to check it out and see what all the fuss is about….
