Hey, Need for Speed has an actual story this year!

NFS-(1)

Need for Speed is the Call of Duty of racing games. And I mean that in the sincerest way possible, because that is not a bad comparison at all.

While other racing games are highly-tuned and technical examples of high-class car pornography, Need For Speed has always been the page three stunner focused more on having a garage full of cars and carte blanche to burn some rubber without voiding your warranty.

After a year away, Need For Speed is back. And this year, it’s all about going back to the series roots after listening to some extensive fan feedback.

“We wanted to redefine what Need for Speed is and say from now on, the core components of what a NFS game is will stay the same,” creative director Craig Sullivan said to IGN.

NFS (2)

So you should always have modified cars, some kind of narrative, the ability to performance tune the car, cops and irresponsible driving.

We know we’re not a straightforward sim of driving around a track – there are other games that do that and they’re fun, but Need for Speed should stand for something consistent so when people think about putting their hard-earned cash into it they know what they’re getting.

One of the bigger changes however, is that players now only have space for five custom rides in their garage. According to Sullivan, that was done in order to make players more heavily invested in their wheels.

“We wanted to teach you the skills and allow you to unlock the possibilities of tuning your car, making it look the way you want to, whether it’s putting fenders on it or a body kit or decals, and we realised that in order to do this we needed to treat the cars with a bit more reverence and respect,” Sullivan explained.

NFS (3)

So we didn’t want to just give you a car that went 15 miles faster in 30 minutes, then another that went 100 miles faster in two hours. We wanted to go: ‘Here’s your car, here’s a bunch of money, treat it like a real thing. Do you want to save up and buy a Lamborghini?

Or do you want to spend $100,000 making this car go as fast as a Lamborghini?’ There’s not many games where you can do that and I think that’s a really interesting aspect of the game.

I can get behind that idea. Most times, when you’ve got a garage full of cars, you only drive a few of them anyway. But here’s the kicker: Need for Speed is actually focusing on the narrative this year.

“We tried to make it so the way your group of friends talk to each other and include you is Need for Speed,” Sullivan said.

We know it shouldn’t be super serious or overly dark, or overly comic book. There’s a tone we think works. It’s fun right? Ultimately at the end of the day you’re driving a car round a city at 200mph being chased by the cops – how serious can it be?

So there’s a storyline in there that pushes you through and lets you have fun. We think it’s cool, we think our fans will like it because they’ve been asking for it so… we’ll see.

To be fair, if Need For Speed’s story wasn’t cheesy and ham-fisted, I’d be disappointed. The game is out soon, on November 3 for PC,PS4 and Xbox One.

  1. Are they talking about the game’s story, or the movie’s?

They already did the whole cross continent race thing from the movie. Remember NFS: The Run.

Stay with that one, the other Need for Speeds after it is Rubbish XD. I’m optimistic for this Need for Speed though. If they truly listened to their fans then it should be a good NFS.

One of the number one things fans asked to have back which they dropped around the time NFS games started to go down the drain is Manual Transmissions.
All the games up to Carbon had the option.
This is a clear enough indicator for me that them saying they listened to their fans is just a PR move.

They listented to everything else the fans have requested, customisation, deep story, varied car list and even though they have left it out, they said they are considering it after all the requests for it. Frankly for me i dont use manual transmission in NFS theres just so much going on screen i cant focus on shifting

It’s a game about car culture and enthusiasm. For me manual is very important. Without it, this doesn’t interested me at all. If they do add it, then I’ll reconsider.
I’ve never personally felt so overwhelmed with everything going on that I didn’t feel manual was needed. I have no issues if people prefer manual or auto, but there needs to be an option. It’s just lazy not to at least give the option. They had it in the old Underground games.

It involves racing icons such as Ken Block, Nakai San, Magnus Walker, Morohoshi San and the Risky Devil and your goal is to gain the attention of one of them or all of them to become the ultimate icon its basically 5 overlapping ways to play the game and its going to have real life cutscenes seamlessly blended into the gameplay

No it doesn’t have a story.
It’s the same rehash of every other title.
Their “year break” was just a PR thing, like everything else EA. The game isn’t intriguing at all.

To be fair. I don’t mind a bland story in a car game too much. It’s all about the cars anyway.
Old School Underground fans though? I’ve owned every single NFS title up to Shift2. I also bought Rivals but refunded it within two hours when I realised it had no manual transmission and the controls on pc were bound and not changeable. I loved both Underground titles, and the old Most Wanted was an excellent game.
I do appreciate them including mid and low-end cars again, and a lot of ideas they have here is good. I can see they’re trying, but I’m just not convinced yet. Race culture, but you can’t even mess around with rev blips and gear-play because it’s auto only? No thanks.

I really like the idea of having space for 5 cars! The whole idea of chasing around and loking for parts to make my favorite car as fast as like a Lambo is really awesome! I am really hoping this will be good plus pre-ordered it and all hahaha so better be!

EA has nothing on The Crew, which is a way better game than this will ever be in nearly every aspect.

Yawn, another crock of BS to hype up a game. I loved the NFS games up until Most wanted, then they went completely pear shaped thanks to the c8nts at EA, hence my “never buy from EA again” philosophy. You did get one thing right with the article in that you called NFS the COD of games. Correct, it started off great and ended up kak. Kind of like kissing your sister, you know that you enjoyed it, but you cant tell anybody about it.

So here is a summary of what the story will be:

You are a [rookie, ex racing driver, ex cop], looking to join the underground racing circles for [revenge, love, to prove yourself]. You enter under the auspices of a [friend, rival, undercover agent] who sets you up for your first race. Your win proves that you have the skillz and you are rewarded by [enduring remarks on how you can do better, a gloat how the competition at this low level is easy, a bromantic cutscene with much cheering]. After your initial win you enter the game and proceed to win despite numerous [betrayals, love circles, encounters with the law]. After much racing and perceverence you beat the best racer to claim [the elusive title of underground champ, the heart of your lover, revenge].

    End.
