Hey Sony, where are the games this year?

You might have noticed that there’s really very little of interest – at least as far as first party games go – for hardcore gamers coming to Sony’s PlayStation 3 this year. There are some great exclusives; Beyond: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension and The Last of Us headed to the console – but all of those are only due next year. The only notable exclusives set for this year are the new Sly Copper and PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale – on a system that’s been praised for its exclusive games. What gives?

The reason Sony isn’t pushing for those eagerly anticipated titles to make it to shelves in time for Christmas this year, according to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, is that the company will be focusing on pursuing the family dollar. the same segment of the market that Nintendo owns, and Microsoft’s been trying to overtake. Sony also wants a slice of the casual gaming pie.

“We’d love to have multi-million sellers for the holiday. But each title needs time to develop,” Yoshida told  GamingEverything. “Especially new IP like The Last of Us. God of War has always come out in March, so that’s a natural time to aim at.”

So what Sony games would they like you to play with your families this year? Really not very much; there’s Sports Champions 2 in November; while LittleBigPlanet Karting and Wonderbook might make it this year.

“Our strategy for Christmas is to go big on family-friendly titles,” says Yoshida. “This is a neglected genre for the PlayStation 3, but as it matures, I think it’s really important to have these games on the platform,” Yoshida added. “I think we have a great lineup this holiday to complement third parties’ big core games.”

If it means Sony actually comes up with something that makes me not regret buying PlayStation Move, then I’m okay with that.
