Has Hideo Kojima turned into Peter Molyneux?

Hideo moly

Some names are synonymous with amazing, revolutionary game creators. They were (and still are) some of our most innovative and creative game makers, the fathers of our industry. But, much like any hero, they eventually fade away… or crash and burn. Peter Molyneux transformed from visionary into Darryn’s nemesis through his over promising and constant sharing of opinion on the state of the gaming industry. And now it seems Hideo Kojima is lining himself up to do the same.

Reported by Digital Spy, Kojima apparently came out during his Develop Brithton keynote with Mark Cerny and stated that he’s “very confident this will be my best work”.

So far, when I’ve been making games, I’ve had to give up on something or at least compromise on something in order to get things done.
But this time, working with you [Mark Cerny] and you bringing the state of the art technologies, we will get around that [usual problem].
I’m very confident that we’re working towards something completely new and that no-one has seen so far. This will be my best work so far, I’m very confident about that.

Why did he have to say that? Why? Now the expectations will go up, and when people are inevitably disappointed he will need to blame people, or make some sort of excuse, or promise even more with the next game.

I get it, he’s excited about his game. He’s excited to be free of Konami and be more free to make the game he wants, the way he wants. But to make these kinds of sweeping statements? It just gives journalists like me something to link back to when his game launches.

Do you think Kojima will make something completely new, or will it like Fable or Curiosity or Godus all over again?

I give him the benefit of doubt cause he is Japanese and they gave us Samurai….. But when you look at the likes of Molyneux, Lord British and many others, They all have a tendency to get huge ego’s and end up isolating themselves from their once adoring fans. Still, Samurai !!!!

Lord British (Richard Garriot) actually already have a new game out in early access called Shroud of the Avatar not sure why he is compared with Molyneux.

They ran a kickstarted and the game releases at the end of the year. Its basically Ultima Online redone in 3d …

He does have quite a ego though but his been like that since day 1.

Actually, If you read some of his outlandish statements about his superiority in the realm of game design, I think my comment is justified.

Well he is the creator of the Ultima series so I would say his not far of point. He is one of the best gaming developers in the world.

His latest project proves it as well.

Moleneux gets a brainfart every now and then and have never delivered anything other than the Black and White series. Can maybe compare Moleneux with CliffyB but I dont think Garriot fits there.

Yeah, I guess I am at the point of the debate where I know I am dealing with a fanboy/ubergeek that buys the marketing garbage hook, line and sinker. I guess it would only be fair for me to say that I have never found any games Lord British or Moleneux had a hand in developing appealing in any way whatsoever.

Let me guess, You are a Will Wright fan ( Yes, The very one who declared the only next gen console was the WII ) ? If not, Good for you.

Here are a few choice comments from your hero…. Lord British.

“I’ve met virtually no one…who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am.”

What I’m saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there’s a reason why.”

So, If that does not say something about the character and inflated ego of this man, Nothing will.

            Never heard of Will Wright.

So you compare those normal comments for someone that has allot of confidence in his skill to Moleneux that borders on insanity sometimes.

Let me guess you are a fudgepacker that sells your body on a hilbrow corner every night. (Oh sorry I thought we are making wild accusations about random stuff to random people we dont know)

Yeah, I doubt I need to say much after your elegant comment. You just used a very negative slur that speaks volumes about your character. But, I doubt you would say that to me in person. Coward.

Let me guess Springs, Brakpan, Benoni or Delmas ?

Actually, you are not proving anything by adding comments like this. You make yourself sound very stupid and your comment carry no weight because of this. No one will take you even a little bit serious.

Saying that Lord British is a mediocre game designer because you did not find his work interesting is one of the dumbest comments I have ever seen.

I find the Harry Potter book series boring and the story very average but that does not mean the story writer is bad or mediocre.

Lord British is allowed to say anything he likes because … HEY he has the right to do so, just like your stupid comments…because HEY your opinion is also an asshole…everyone has one .. right?

RustedFaith, no need to bother with this dude. If you do not agree with his opinion then you are a kid and blah blah blah … just ignore him.

If we are going to be honest, His reaction was unsolicited. But, It fascinates me that when I made fun of him for being a fanboy, It results in him resorting to incredibly negative slur that reflects badly on the type of person he is. I guess the use of a online nickname absolves him of any responsibility for the kind of thinking that belongs in the toilet.

If a honest joke results in a person exploding in a fit of intolerance and hate, I feel no obligation to try and justify my point.

Let me ask you this, Why do you feel the need to attack me ? Honestly man. I bear no real ill will to you or anyone. Has humanity deteriorated to such a low point that a simple comment in jest results in a you hating me so overtly It defies logic ? Is your life so meaningless that you feel obliged to attack and hate a complete stranger that you know nothing about ?

If you knew me in real life, I doubt you would find any reason to find fault with me as a person and we would share common ground as gamers. My comments are usually gut reactions to the articles and views expressed in them. Yeah, We have off days where we lash out. I have that same problem. But I am dealing with it to try and improve as a man.

Let me leave you with this thought, While you may think I am a dick or you disagree with my points, in the real world, I would save you from a burning car or from drowning if ever the situation presented itself. Let that last sentence be a metaphor for how I see my fellow man.

            Peace.

Are you serious? Kojima has never disappointed. Maybe a little bit story wise with MGSV but even then its gameplay is the best in the genre. So Molyneux and Kojima is not even close to being a fair comparison.

yes. And education levels of slugs, albeit sentient ones, seems to be eclipsing human education again.

AND winners fail from time to time too. (I must be the most super awesomest winner of all time)

Molyneux has failed, plenty of times. Kojima hasn’t. Till that day, if that day ever arrives I’ll preorder his sandwiches for him every day.

never. Seems like more FPS and stealthy to me and Deus EX: HR was my first truly enjoyable foray into games like that.

Played Ground Zero’s a little bit, it was sort of fun, but not enough to get me hooked.

also, the very long intro felt off to me, like I was missing insider information. Who is this guy, that person, who is good, who is bad?

That is typically what happens when you play a game that has its story drenched in previous releases.

You should give MGSV a look, I’m busy with it now and I’m loving it – is a stealth-based FPS, and a very very good one. Not only is the game play fun, but there’s a ton of choice on equipment, upgrading, customising – which I love.

And it’s the only Kojima game I’ve played.

If you can put up with the low gfx i really really do recommend playing MGS3. Man. To date. One of the best games ive ever played.

All the MGS games infact (Havent played V)
Thats if you are interested in the full story that is 😛

I’ve never understood his celebrity status to begin with. That mirrors my feelings on Cliffy B and Peter MolyNo. So in that sense, yup. Exactly the same. And honestly, creating expectations like that to an already ravenous and almost delusional fan-base is always going to lead to disaster.

I think a better comparison, in terms of bubble of hype, is look at Hideo Kojima in terms of John Romero.

John Romero was fired of Id Software, after Quake, for internal reasons, at that point he was “King Midas” in terms of possibilities, everything scaled to be gold. During the arrival of Ion Storm and the development of Daikatana, the same type of marketing was there, showing the man and the new company, as a revolution.

The best luck for Kojima with this expensive steps, because “hype” is a disgrace for many inside this industry.
